Derrick had a big personality and a heart of gold. He believed deeply in people and gave countless hours to volunteering.
When Derrick was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, everything changed quickly. The man who had always looked after others now needed others to look after him.
During the final week of his life, Derrick was cared for on the inpatient unit at St Barnabas. This gave him and his family the space to treasure precious moments together. To sit by his side, hold his hand and reminisce. To simply be a family. 💙
One day, Derrick’s six-year-old granddaughter Ariella came to visit. She pulled a chair up to his bed, climbed up, gently stroked his cheek and said: “Grandad, I know you can’t speak to me, but I just want you to know that I love you and I will miss you.”
Moments like this matter so much. We help families through the hardest days of their lives, allowing them to live life to the full in the time they have. 🌻
Will you help us continue to support families like Derrick’s and make precious memories possible?
