This Refugee Week, we're sharing a video from the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, which explores the challenges experienced by Bircan, Zozan, Lydia and Virginie when they arrived in Scotland.

At a unique tea party, these four immigrant women discuss the misunderstandings they encountered when dealing with the mental health system about their post-traumatic stress disorder and related depression.

Today marks the start of Refugee Week, an arts festival celebrating the creativity and resilience of refugees. This year's theme is courage, acknowledging the immense courage shown by refugees to face unknown journeys, learn new languages, navigate unfamiliar systems and step into an uncertain world.

At West Sussex Mind, we recognise that, once people have fled to safety, they often face trauma and challenges with their mental health - and that it can be difficult for them to find the support they need 💜

We can all show courage ourselves and help refugees in our communities through simple acts of kindness that help refugees feel more welcome and reduce their sense of isolation - because healing doesn't happen in isolation.

Refugee Week commissioned artwork from Quentin Blake for this year's theme, encouraging simple acts such as:
🗣️ Having a courageous conversation with someone
🎞️ Watching a film together
🥣 Sharing food and stories
🚶🏾‍♂️Walking and talking together
📕Reading a book to educate yourself
🎨 Getting drawing and painting
🐝 Letting nature inspire you
🏃🏾‍♀️ Moving together for mental health and connection.

What will you do this week?

What if you felt more confident supporting men’s mental health, so that people feel able to express themselves, and support happens earlier, before things reach crisis point.

Understanding how to spot when someone might be struggling, how to start a conversation and how to respond in a supportive, safe way.

The Men’s Health Strategy for England (2025) shows that many men are less likely to seek help – which is why awareness, confidence and early support matter so much.

Here at West Sussex Mind, we offer practical training such as Su***de First Aid and Mental Health First Aid, as well as tailored sessions to meet the needs of workplaces and communities.

With Men’s Health Week starting 15 June, it’s a great time to take a step towards better support.

We are currently seeking 3-4 new volunteer trustees to join our Board.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds, however we would particularly like to hear from those with experience working in equality, diversity and inclusion, especially with embedding anti-racism practice, to help guide us with our active pledge to becoming an anti-racist organisation.

No previous trustee experience required - just a willingness to learn, self-motivation and committed to achieving positive outcomes for people with mental health problems.

Deadline for applications is 9am on Monday 29th June 2026.
