We’re a UK charity supporting working-age stroke survivors and their families to reclaim their lives through peer support and community.

Together we can break this stereotype and show people that Stroke Survivors go on and lead successful and fulfilling lives. Are you supporting someone after a stroke? We'd like to hear from you.

Stroke doesn't just change the life of the person who has had it. It affects partners, families and friends too.

We want to understand what support would make a real difference to the people supporting someone after a stroke.

Whether you think of yourself as a carer, partner, family member or friend, we'd really value your views.

Your answers will help us understand what our community needs and shape how we support families in the future.

A huge World Stroke Day thank you to our amazing groups and volunteers!

This year's message was Information Saves Lives, and our community did an incredible job of bringing that message to life.

From hospital visits and information stalls to fundraising and sponsored walks, our volunteer-led groups and supporters went above and beyond to raise awareness of stroke and help more people discover the support available through Different Strokes.

Here's just some of what they got up to:

📍 Ashford, Kent visited Kent & Canterbury Hospital, sharing leaflets on the stroke ward and speaking with staff about our support for younger stroke survivors. The League of Friends shop also kindly displayed their poster.

📍 Birmingham held pop-up stalls throughout October at Thimblemill Library, Moseley Hall Hospital, ASDA Cape Hill, Bleakhouse Library and Rowley Regis Hospital. A special thank you to Ingrid for all her hard work organising and attending the stalls, and to everyone who helped.

📍 Bolton organised a bucket collection and awareness stall at Tesco Extra in Middlebrook. Chris and Ann raised an amazing £185 in just four hours!

📍 Whitstable visited Faversham Health Centre, chatting with local people and sharing leaflets about the support available to stroke survivors.

📍 Carlisle saw Brenda, Chris and Pamela at ASDA, raising awareness of stroke risk and the support offered by Different Strokes.

📍 Derby marked the day with a sponsored walk at Bennerley Viaduct, the “Iron Giant”, raising an incredible £1,000! Well done to everyone who took part and supported the event.

📍 Gloucester saw our Ambassador Sue Sandars holding an awareness stall at ASDA alongside NHS staff, who were offering blood pressure checks.

📍 Great Yarmouth had an information stand at the leisure centre, organised by our Regional Coordinator Sandra Ross.

Every conversation, leaflet shared, event organised and donation made helps more people learn about stroke and find support when they need it.

We're so proud of our groups, volunteers and supporters. Thank you for giving your time, energy and enthusiasm to make this year's World Stroke Day our biggest yet.

Together, we're helping spread the message that Information Saves Lives. 💜

"On 14th May I was suddenly dependent on everyone around me. That was a big mind-shift.

My whole life I’ve wanted to help people, and suddenly I was the one who needed help.

Acceptance is hard, but the quicker you get there – the better, so you can set your own goals to move forward at a pace appropriate to your own recovery and celebrate the wins when you get them."

THANK YOU for being part of World Stroke Day.

As World Stroke Day comes to a close, we want to say a huge thank you to every group, every community member and every volunteer who makes Different Strokes what it is.

Thank you for sharing your stories, offering support, bringing people together and helping spread the message that Information Saves Lives.

Every conversation, every connection and every act of kindness helps build a community where younger stroke survivors and their families can find understanding, information and support.

Together, we are creating a community that matters. One where younger stroke survivors know they are not alone and don't have to face life after stroke without support.

World Stroke Day may be over for another year, but our work continues every day.

Accept the now. Take things one day at a time.

Life after stroke can bring changes and challenges for the whole family. As Huma, our BASS Ambassador the daughter of a stroke survivor, shares, learning to accept the present and focus on what we can control can make a difference.

It’s not always easy to let go of how things used to be, but there can be value in recognising small achievements, celebrating progress and appreciating moments of happiness along the way.

Huma also reminds us that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Whether you’re a stroke survivor or supporting someone you love, talking about how you feel and connecting with people who understand can help you feel less alone.

Thank you, Huma, for sharing your experience and offering this thoughtful reminder to our community.

At Different Strokes, we know stroke affects families as well as survivors. You don’t have to navigate life after stroke alone.
