We have made 100 little rolled beeswax candles for one of our customers to give to her customers. They look so sweet individually decorated. A corporate group, our trainees and staff, have all helped with this order - let alone the bees working hard to create the beeswax.

Happy National Honey Day 🍯 💛 🧡 We love all things real honey at Urban Bee-lievers. The wonderful bees work so hard to make this amazing liquid gold to share with us all. The bees have lots of honey in their hives to keep them well fed through autumn and winter as well as lots for us to enjoy and keep us well too.

The solitary ivy mining bee has been fascinating us over the last few weeks as hundreds of them have been hanging out in the polytunnels where we grow tomatoes. Literally hundreds of them on the plants, metal frames and plastic covers. After some research, we think the bees were males waiting for a mate. Today, as we took down the tomatoe plants and the bees have gone. We will miss them.

It's so exciting to see empty honey frames frozen and stacked in clean honey boxes for the winter. We freeze the frames for two days to ensure there are no wax moth eggs in the woodwork of the frame and flame the boxes for the same reason. We put newspaper between the stored boxes just in case we miss an egg. The paper ensures the wax moth larvae will only destroy one box of frames as it can't get through the paper to others.

It was a lot of fun to meet the lovely Nightingales WI group in Stony Stratford last night. I updated them on all the exciting projects at the Urb Farm in Wolverton, the wide selection of things grown at the farm and our work with young people. I also talked about the bees and amazing honey. There were lots of great questions. Thank you all 🐝

It's vital to check the hive entrance each time you visit a beehive as it can tell you so much about the status of the colony. At the moment, hornets and wasps are trying to capture bees and steal honey. The bees can defend themselves but the beekeeper can help out a bit too. All our hives are getting ready for winter. The hive is looking good.

The weather this year has changed the timing of some activity in the beehive. The removal of the male bees, the drones, usually happens at the beginning of autumn. But this year it is a month early. It seems harsh, but that is the way the honey bees have managed to survive. Thanks, drones, for all you have done and goodbye x

Another lovely corporate bee experience today at Kuehne + Nagel. We had so much fun queen spotting and learning about the supersedure process the bees have entered by creating one single queen cell. Never a dull moment!
