Den building for all ages this afternoon in the woods at Wildside. Always one of our most popular activities. It's always great to see kids and adults working together.

Proudly showing off their bee finger puppets, created at this morning's 'Buzzing Bees' workshop. I think we almost ended up with a whole hive on our hands! It's was marvellous to see the kids happy and engaged and outdoors for part of the time.

NIFTY NATURE NUGGETS:

Have you seen strange blobs of white foam on the stems and leaves of plants? That is ‘cuckoo spit’ produced by a tiny insect called the froghopper. The bubbles are called ‘cuckoo spit’ because they appear in May when the cuckoos come back. It is not harmful and you do not need to remove it from the plant.

The baby froghopper (or nymph) feeds on the watery sap of the plant and blows bubbles with the liquid to protect itself. (Think Superman with a cloak of bubbles – cool or what?) The adult insect has superpowers too. It is only half a centimetre long but it can jump 70 cm upwards and over 100 times its own length longways. To do that, it generates a G-force 80 times the force that an astronaut experiences being shot into orbit.

What did you have for breakfast this morning? Honey on your toast, by any chance? It's a fascinating thing, is honey and moreso the bees that produce it - don't you think? Anyway, even as you read this, we've got bee expert, Ron, on his way to us to delve deeper into the world of bees and no doubt things related. Why not come and take part in the quiz and bring the kids out to have a go at making bee finger puppets. Ron has a very informative presentation lined up for us. We still have several spaces left. We plan to kick off at 10:30 so you've still got time to grab a ticket and come on down. Tickets available here: https://www.wildsideac.co.uk/event-details/buzzing-bees - See you in a bit, then?
