Today, British Mensa celebrates 80 years. 🎉

But where did the story begin?

In 1946, a chance meeting between Dr Lance Ware and Roland Berrill on a train sparked a conversation about intelligence and how it could be measured. That conversation planted the seed for Mensa, which was founded in Oxford on 1 October that year.

For its first 14 years, Mensa was essentially a British organisation, before the idea that began here started to reach further afield.

Today, as we mark eight decades of Mensa, swipe through to discover where it all began and how a chance encounter grew into something much bigger.
