🐾 FROM SHEEPDOG TO SEARCH DOG! ā¤ļø

We’re delighted to announce that Jackie and Eve have passed their national assessment, qualifying as a Level 2 Lowland Rescue Air Scenting Search Dog team! šŸŽ‰

Eve now becomes Surrey Search & Rescue’s sixth operational search dog, qualified to help search for missing people across countryside and woodland.

But Eve hasn’t had the most straightforward journey to becoming a search dog.

For the first three and a half years of her life, she moved between four different sheep farmers, from Lancashire to Surrey. She was meant to be a working sheepdog, but despite several attempts, it just wasn’t quite the right job for her.

Eventually, Eve found herself in foster care, where she spent three months before meeting Jackie.

When Jackie first brought Eve home, she was a very nervous dog. With time and patience, her confidence began to grow. In June 2024, they decided to give air scenting training a go, and it turned out Eve was rather good at it!

Since then, Jackie and Eve have put in countless hours of training to reach this point, and it’s fantastic to see all that hard work pay off.

A special thank you to Juliet and all our K9 team members who have helped train Jackie and Eve along the way. Juliet also travelled to Wiltshire today as an assessor for other teams.

Thanks also to Anne, who provided official handler support during the assessment, and to Caroline, Ted, Monique and Lois, who travelled to Wiltshire to act as missing people for other teams.

There’s a lot of work behind getting a search dog to operational standard, and plenty of people who have helped make this possible.

She might not have made it as a sheepdog, but we reckon she’s found a pretty important job instead! ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Nobody searches alone.

When we’re called out, we work as a team. We share information, make decisions together and rely on each other to get the job done.

Nobody is expected to have every answer or manage everything themselves. It’s something we understand in search and rescue, but perhaps something we’re not always so good at remembering in everyday life.

On World Mental Health Day, it’s worth remembering that asking for support isn’t a sign that you’re struggling to cope. It’s part of looking after yourself, just as looking out for each other is part of being a team.

Whether it’s a colleague, a friend, a family member or someone you trust, you don’t have to face everything on your own.

Search and rescue is very much a team effort, and that extends well beyond county boundaries. Working together means we can share resources, skills and people when they’re needed most ā¤ļø

šŸ’š A heartfelt thank you to Surrey Search & Rescue for assisting us on a recent search.

We’re grateful to your team for giving their time, skills and commitment to support our search effort. Working alongside our neighbouring teams means so much, and your help was greatly appreciated.

From everyone at Sussex Search and Rescue — thank you for being there. šŸ¤

Finding them is only the beginning.

Our search teams train to locate missing people but a find can be just the start of a much bigger operation.

Last night’s training exercise took our teams through all of next stages of a rescue: locating and assessing casualties, delivering medical care in challenging conditions, stabilising and packaging them, and working together to safely extract them from difficult terrain.

All of it carried out after dark, when visibility is limited and even simple tasks become harder.

A huge thank you to Surrey Hills Diving for allowing us to use their site for the exercise, and to Casualties Union for providing such realistic casualties and helping make the scenario feel as close to the real thing as possible.

Training like this gives our volunteers the chance to practise the whole rescue -from the first find to getting a casualty safely off the hillside.

Search. Rescue. Care.

Thank you to Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey for all of their support!

Thank you to Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey for all of their support!

It was a real pleasure hosting the brilliant Surrey Search & Rescue team at our HQ for their annual meeting last week.

Their volunteers play a vital role assisting the emergency services in searching for vulnerable adults & children when they go missing in Surrey.

Deputy PCC Ellie Vesey-Thompson was on hand at the event to give out long service awards to members & hear about their recent achievements.

Last year the team, which is made up of over 80 volunteers and dogs, attended 50 call outs & spent over 6,000 hours on deployments in our county.

Amazing work guys - we salute you all! 🫔 šŸ‘

A huge thank you to Molesey Football Club for their kindness and support during a recent callout.

The club welcomed our team, allowing us to use their facilities and car park while we were deployed in the area - something that was very much appreciated by everyone involved.

Support like this from our local community can make a real difference when our volunteers are out on a search.

Search Dog Dilly was particularly grateful for the chance to stretch her legs on the pitch too!

Thank you for making us so welcome and for supporting Surrey Search & Rescue. ā¤ļø

This Grandparents’ Day, we’re celebrating one of our own.

Jamie joined Surrey Search & Rescue in 2018. Since then, he’s been involved in 386 incidents and clocked up 2,982 hours with the team.

As a Search Manager, Search Planner and Search Operations officer, Jamie has spent a lot of those hours doing work most people never see. When someone goes missing, there’s a huge amount happening behind the scenes to work out where to search, what resources to send and what to do next as new information comes in. That can mean sitting in our Incident Command Unit or at the back of a vehicle with a laptop, planning where to send foot teams, search dogs, drones and boats. At other times, Jamie is out on the ground as a Team Leader, taking a team of Search Technicians out to look for the missing person.

Until recently, Jamie was also our Head of Search, responsible for Surrey SAR’s overall search capability. That meant making sure we had the right people trained and ready, developing our search procedures, supporting training, working with Surrey Police and neighbouring SAR teams, and making sure the systems and equipment behind a search were ready when needed.

He’s recently handed that role over, although he remains very much an integral part of our operational team.

So Grandparents’ Day seemed like the perfect opportunity to share a photo of Jamie with his grandson (scroll to the end!) and to say a very big thank you for everything he’s put into Surrey Search & Rescue over the years.

2,982 hours, 386 incidents and a huge amount of work behind the scenes.

Happy Grandparents’ Day, Jamie. ā¤ļø
