Ferry Project

Ferry Project Helping the homeless with love and support towards independence since 1998 On entry to Ferry Project, individuals are assigned a key worker.

Established in 1998, Ferry project is an award winning social enterprise and registered charity that helps homeless people in fenland. The aim of the ferry project is not simply to provide accommodation, but to give people the skills they need to enable them to live independently. These include life skills such as cooking and cleaning, education courses, vocational training, volunteering and emplo

yment opportunities. We currently provide up to fifty bed spaces in Wisbech and engage with over three hundred clients per year. We are the largest provider for homelessness-related issues in the district, engaging with an estimated eighty percent of those who find themselves homeless in Fenland. "Ferry Project provides a short-term interaction in an individual’s life when they have an immediate need. Once we carry them to their destination, they move on.”
Keith Smith, Founder & Director of Ferry Project

Our clients include people with financial problems, people fleeing domestic violence, people recovering from a family breakdown or from drug and alcohol abuse, young people leaving the care system, those who have been sexually abused, ex-offenders and those with simply nowhere else to go. The key worker will work with the individual client to assess that person’s need and create an individual support plan with self-determined goals. These goals may include referrals to partner agencies, and getting back in touch with family and friends. Counselling and basic skills training are performed at the project’s headquarters, Octavia View, with additional educational courses provided at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech.

We're delighted to share that The Ferry Project has been awarded Β£600,000 in grant funding from the Ending Homelessness in Communities (EHCF) fund β€” a government programme supporting innovative approaches to preventing homelessness and improving outcomes for those facing the greatest barriers to stable housing.

This investment will power two vital areas of work in Fenland:

Tenancy Sustainment & Prevention β€” early intervention support to help people stay in their homes before they reach crisis point, including budgeting support, benefits advice, and practical assistance.

Complex Needs Stabilisation & Recovery β€” intensive, trauma-informed wraparound support for the hardest-to-reach rough sleepers in our community, built around No Wrong Door principles and the ethos of Housing First. This pathway addresses severe and multiple disadvantages with specialist mental health and substance misuse support, relationship-based casework, and clear routes into sustainable accommodation.

The project has been developed alongside a wide network of partners including Fenland District Council, Citizens Advice, CPSL Mind, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, DWP, and local health and mental health services β€” ensuring people receive truly coordinated, holistic support.

Our CEO, Sandra Ferreira, said: "I am incredibly excited about this project. I genuinely believe it has the potential to make a significant difference to some of the most vulnerable people in our community."

Delivery begins October/November 2026. This is a significant step forward β€” not just for us, but for the people we serve.

Your inbox can do more than receive emails β€” it can help change lives.

At Ferry Project, we've been working alongside homeless and vulnerable people in Fenland for over 25 years. We're the largest homelessness provider in the area, supporting around 80% of local people experiencing homelessness β€” from emergency accommodation right through to independent living.

When you join our mailing list, you'll hear real stories of people rebuilding their lives, learn about the difference your support makes, and be among the first to know about ways you can get involved β€” whether that's volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word.

It costs nothing. It takes seconds. And it connects you to work that genuinely matters.

Giant Jenga anyone? Some of our clients had an absolutely fabulous time recently playing the Ferry Project Giant Jenga Challenge! The afternoon began with hotdogs for lunch. Then various pairs took on the giant Jenga challenge, with the grand finale game being clients v staff. Great fun was had by all and the afternoon was finished off with some refreshing ice pops.
