If you are worried about an injured swan or cygnet, please call us on 01753 859397. Our aim is to return them to the wild as soon as possible.

What We Do:
Swan Lifeline rescues and provides shelter and treatment for sick and injured swans. We educate the public about the incidence and effects of pollution and human activities on swans and other wildfowl on the UK's rivers and waterways. We aim to provide a professionally managed treatment centre to continue in perpetuity, not dependent upon any one person or group for its survival. Our Centre:
Our centre on Cuckoo Weir Island includes a dedicated treatment centre and intensive care unit with nine heated pens. We can house up to 180 swans and on average, we are called to rescue over 700 swans and admit over 300 for treatment in any given year. We work within a 50-mile radius of our site and can advise a course of action for any enquiries outside of this radius. Our Services:
We work with RSPCA, Thames Valley Police, Metropolitan Police, Network Rail as well as other wildlife organisations whose inspectors will call us to help with swan rescues throughout the South East. Additionally, we have links with The Rangers who work in country parks and call on us for advice and help. Our on-site team are available seven days a week, providing rescues, phone advice, treatment and care to our admitted swans. Our staff members are supported by volunteers and a hands-on management team of Trustees.

Today we have been to two separate locations for two fishing tackle related rescues 🎣

The first was for a female that had swallowed some line, luckily there was no hook attached so it was a quick removal and she was on her way. The second, was for a male swan that had a fair amount of line wrapped around his leg. This was also quickly removed and he was straight back to his waiting family 🦢🦢

We had a busy start to the weekend when we were called to a swan that had crash landed into a Sainsburys carpark on Saturday morning. Quickly secured, we then received a call for another swan that had crash landed in someone’s garden, just a couple of roads away from the Sainsburys. It became apparent that they were most likely flying together and potentially got blown of course due to the high winds. Luckily they were both found and could be released back to the river together 🦢🦢

Earlier this month we posted about a female swan that had injured her wing during a bumpy crash landing. We are pleased to share that she has now been returned home to her waiting partner 🥰 It is such a joy to watch them go back to where they belong, and is the whole reason we do what we do 🦢🦢

This lovely chap was rescued last week after he was spotted trapped in between two dominant pairs, with an injured leg he was unable to weight-bare on. The other two pairs of territorial swans were not too impressed by his presence, so we assume he picked up his injury whilst attempting to get away from them. Swans are naturally very territorial animals, so this is normal behaviour for them. However, it is lovely to have so many kind members of public that keep an eye out for them and alert us of any swans that end up on the losing end of a dispute 🦢

Earlier in the week we were alerted to a poorly swan in Southall, with what we suspected to be avian botulism. Although the weather has significantly cooled down, some waterways are still very stagnant or slow moving, allowing the bacteria to potentially build and release toxins.

This swan is still very poorly but she is making small improvements everyday, so we’ve got our fingers crossed that she will recover.

We are currently caring for a number of cygnets that have managed to get themselves in to a bit of mischief whilst taking their first flights.

One of these cygnets was seen flying in to a bridge, then falling to the water and struggling to stay upright. Our rescuer got there just in time, if he had stayed in the water much longer it is likely he would have drowned. The other was found on a pathway with a damaged wing and some nasty injuries to his face and bill.

Both are receiving dedicated care and are enjoying each other’s company whilst they heal. We are hopeful that both of them will make a full recovery 🦢

This lovely girl was recently rescued because of an injury to her right wing. A member of public heard a large crash as the swan came in to land, and not long later, she appeared covered in blood. Due to the location and nature of the wound, we assume that something sharp pierced her wing as she landed. Despite the amount of blood, the injury does not appear to be serious and she is recovering nicely 🦢

This week we’ve been busy with lots of crash landing rescues. It’s the time of year where many swans are on the move, including cygnets taking their first fights, which often result in some bumpy landings!

We recently rescued this lovely cygnet after he was spotted with a large fishing hook imbedded in one of his legs. He was only away from his family for a couple of minutes whilst the hook was being removed, but as you can see by the video, he was very pleased to be returned 🦢
