cannot stress this enough!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! when you find an injured wild animal DO NOT pet it, cuddle it, carry it, feed it, water it or baby it!!
Today we were called out to a muntjac who had been involved in an rta.
Despite the finders calling a few rescues apparently NOT ONE advised on correct handling of the situation!! One advised to take it to a park and leave it there?! Another passed my details but offered zero support or advice to the finders in the mean time.
So the members of public wanted to help, so the commencement of picking it up, carrying it and helping. Well unfortunately the caused themselves injuries all down the ribs and stomach as well as putting the already stressed and injured animal further into severe shock!
When the lovely Charlotte Dearn arrived (before myself as i further away) she was ambushed by 2 women carrying said deer and placing it in the back seats of her car before she could even park up?!
THIS IS NOT OKAY!
It was so unbelievably dangerous!! This poor deer could have caused serious damage and injuries to himself, the car and to those involved. Whilst muntjac may look small and unassuming they are absolute power units! The women involved luckily only suffered bruising and a few scrapes but could have been broken ribs, deep wounds, other broken bones etc. WILD ANIMALS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY!!..
Thankfully Charlotte and her car were unscathed ( largely due to the fact the poor boy was in such deep shock and trauma from being "helped" for about 3 HOURS!!
Only time will tell if he can survive the shock and damage caused from the prolonged stress!
Deer especially can die from shock and capture shock. Even if not immediately fatal it can cause damage to the organs meaning a slower death!
So please if you find a deer just keep a distance and WATCH if after an HR or so it's not moved on then call those who can help.
