The girls return to action today at Abbey RFC - Reading Abbey Rugby Club, teaming up with our new friends from Olney RFC.

Playing together gives the girls the opportunity to take the field as a full 12-a-side team, with plenty of substitutes to keep the legs fresh, while also getting to know some new teammates who share their love of rugby.

❤️💙

WANTED: 9 Rugby Players

LAST SEEN: Making a little piece of history at the Grove RFC Minis Rugby Festival 2026.

For the first time, Grove RFC had a dedicated U12 girls team take to the field at our Minis Festival.

Nine girls. One team. A huge amount of excitement, pride and, of course, plenty of rugby.

These girls are the foundation of our five-year girls rugby pathway at Grove, with the aim of building a journey from minis rugby through to U18 and ultimately into our Grove RFC Ladies team.

And what better place to start than at home, in front of their families, teammates and the wider Grove RFC community.

This is just the beginning.

Girls rugby is growing at Grove RFC.

Tomorrow is a pretty special day for the girls at Grove RFC.

After training, learning and putting in the work, our U12 girls finally get to step onto the pitch at the Grove RFC Minis Rugby Festival for their first full-contact games.

Last weekend, the girls had their first run out together with Newbury, giving them a chance to experience playing as a squad. Tomorrow they get to bring everything they have been working on into a Grove shirt, in front of their families, and the wider Grove RFC community.

And they will make a little bit of Grove RFC history while they are doing it.

They will be the first U12 girls team to take part in our Grove RFC Youth Minis Rugby Festival.

This squad brings together a fantastic blend of returning Grove players and new girls joining the pathway, with every player bringing something different to the team. They have worked hard, supported each other and grown together, and tomorrow is their chance to enjoy it.

It is also a really important moment in our longer-term vision for girls rugby at Grove, building a pathway from minis through to junior and ultimately Grove RFC Ladies rugby.

We cannot wait to see them out there.

And to all the visiting clubs and teams joining us tomorrow, welcome to Grove. We hope you have a fantastic day, enjoy your rugby and help us make this first U12 girls festival appearance one the girls will remember.

Good luck, girls. Go and enjoy it.

2026/27 season is underway!

We joined our friends at Newbury RFC on Sunday for a great Pitch Up & Play, alongside girls’ teams from across Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

For our girls, it was the first opportunity to play together as a Grove team against other girls’ sides - and a chance to put all that training into practice.

For our coaches, it was fantastic to see the enthusiasm, confidence and potential across the group. Just as importantly, it was great to see so many clubs putting time and energy into growing girls’ rugby.

A big thank you to Newbury RFC for hosting, and to all the clubs and coaches who are helping create more opportunities for girls to play, develop and stay in the game.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again throughout the season - and watching this group grow together - until next time Abbey RFC - Reading Abbey Rugby Club Maidenhead RFC Reading RFC Hungerford RFC Juniors Bracknell RFC Girls Didcot Rugby Club - Didcot RUFC Oxford Quins RFC❤️💙

What a brilliant Ladies team we have at Grove RFC this year.

As we launch Girls Rugby at Grove, it’s so exciting to think about what the pathway could look like for these girls over the next few years.

We’re lucky enough to train before our Ladies on Wednesdays, which means our girls get to see senior women’s rugby up close - and our Ladies get to see some of the players who we hope will be joining them on the pitch in years to come.

That’s what we’re building: a pathway from girls rugby at Grove all the way through to our Ladies team.

For the girls playing today, the future is right there in front of them. And that’s pretty special.

We’re incredibly proud to be working with the wonderful Bucks Girls Rugby Charity this season as we launch our own U12 Girls Rugby team at Grove RFC.

We’re fortunate to have built a squad of girls ready to take the next step together, but we know that isn’t the reality for every club.

At grassroots level, getting enough girls of the same age together to form a team week in week out can be a real challenge.

The work Bucks Girls Rugby Charity does to bring clubs and players together has been instrumental helping girls and clubs across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire get more games, more time on the pitch and more experience playing rugby - while making sure they have the opportunity to keep developing, making friends and enjoying the game.

We’re really pleased to be part of that this season and to play our part in the continued growth of girls’ rugby across the region.

We can’t wait to see our U12s get started with our first Pitch up and Play at Abbey RFC - Reading Abbey Rugby Club, and we’re looking forward to seeing all the other teams and girls we’ll be sharing the season with.

More girls. More rugby. More opportunities to play. And we’d love your daughter to be part of it.

Here’s to a great season 💙❤️

A NEW CHAPTER FOR GIRLS RUGBY AT GROVE

This Sunday, our U12 girls took to the pitch together as a team for the very first time. ❤️💙

We welcomed back returning players, as well as new girls who had never played rugby before but wanted to come along and be part of this new team.

With coaches Alec, Sam and Dean making the most of the sunshine, there was running, smiling and plenty of rugby on display.

It was brilliant to see the girls getting to know each other, playing together and taking their first steps as an all-girls team.

We can’t wait to see where these girls go this year. 💙❤️

And if your daughter would like to be part of it, new players are always welcome and no previous rugby experience is necessary.

Every orchestra needs a conductor. Every team needs a coach.

So, as we get to know the girls of Grove RFC U12, it’s only right that we introduce the person helping bring it all together…

**Meet Alec Richardson - U12 Girls Head Coach.**

Alec has been coaching for five years, and his approach is pretty simple: hard work, intensity, discipline, civility - and making sure everyone has their place.

His sporting hero? Maud Muir.

His pre-training ritual? Cones out, desperately searching for the whistle, then attempting to get everyone into a line so he can count them.

His interests away from rugby? D&D, heavy metal and neolithic stones.

And his one-word description on the pitch?

**LOUD.**

Most importantly, Alec believes there is a place in rugby for everybody.

> “If you haven't fit in anywhere else we've got a you-shaped space.”

That's the kind of coach we think every girls' team deserves.

Come and meet Alec and the rest of the girls at our Rugby Open Day, 6th September.
