Even the heat couldn’t stop us during last week’s heatwave! 🌞
The apiary has now been fully mowed and is ready for today.
A big thank you to all the trustees and members who help keep the bees inspected every Saturday. Your dedication and hard work are greatly appreciated!
Please remember to stay hydrated, wear appropriate sun protection, and take regular breaks whenever needed. πŸ’¦πŸ§΄πŸ–οΈ

On Friday, we collected several new colonies from Becky’s Bees 🐝

A big thank you to Michael and Pete for going to collect them, safely bringing them back, and placing them on site ready for hiving the next day. Your help keeps everything running smoothlyβ€”much appreciated!

Swarm control becomes necessary at the point a colony has made an irreversible decision to swarm. This is often seen when a 'charged' queen cell is seen containing royal jelly and a larva

Swarming build-up & prevention often happens in progressive stages in spring and early summer
Swarm prevention & control can often be a managed process if the triggers are observed and action taken

Spring is upon us 🌼🐝 and with temperatures settling into the early teens, it’s the perfect time to start checking your hives - but how is best to check?

🐝 Suit up & stay calm
🐝 Use a little smoke to keep bees relaxed
🐝 Check for eggs = queen is laying πŸ‘‘
🐝 Look for a strong, even brood pattern πŸ₯š
🐝 Make sure they have some stores for those cold nights and are bringing in new nectar and pollen
🐝 Watch out for the start of queen cells
🐝 Keep it quick, gentle & stress-free πŸ’›

Healthy hive = happy bees 🌸

🌬️🐝 Windy night ahead in Oxfordshire!

The forecast says strong winds and heavy rain tonight, with gusts up to around 40–45 mph. Not ideal flying weather for our little pollinators! 🌧️

Our bees will be tucked up safely in the hive, riding out the storm together and keeping warm inside. That’s one of the amazing things about honey bees β€” they cluster and protect the colony no matter what the weather throws at them. πŸ’›

Beekeepers β€” it’s worth checking your hives tomorrow to make sure straps are still secure, roofs are in place, and nothing has shifted in the wind.

Stay safe everyone β€” and hopefully calmer skies (and better foraging weather!) tomorrow. 🌀️🍯

🐝🌼 March Jobs for Bees (and Beekeepers!) 🌼🐝

Spring is finally arriving and the hive is coming back to life! As temperatures rise above 12Β°C, we can start those all-important first inspections of the year. Here’s what March looks like in the apiary:

🍯 Check food stores – colonies can run low before the first nectar flow, so fondant or light syrup may still be needed.
πŸ‘‘ First full inspection – confirm the queen is present and laying, check brood pattern, and assess overall colony strength.
🐝 Monitor pests – keep an eye on Varroa levels as brood rearing increases.
🧹 Clean & prepare equipment – repair frames, scorch boxes, remove mouse guards, and get supers ready.
🌸 Watch colony growth – expanding populations may need extra space soon to prevent early swarming.
πŸ““ Plan ahead – review records and prepare your swarm management strategy before things get busy.

March is all about careful checks, steady preparation, and supporting strong spring build-up πŸ’› The work we do now sets the tone for the whole season ahead.

Are your bees bringing in pollen yet? 🐝✨
