Stewart had already secured his first World Championship. Jochen Rindt was yet to win his own. Looking back, this single frame captures both achievement and potential, with Formula 1 standing on the edge of a new decade.

Dementia is not a single disease with a single cause. It involves genetics, inflammation, vascular health, immune response, requiring imaging, data science and clinical care.

No single researcher or discipline can tackle all of it alone.

Our teams programme is designed for this complexity. Awarding up to £750,000 over five years to back long-term, collaborative research, the programme encourages disciplines to come together.

Projects range from early laboratory research through to clinical studies, including new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat disease, and understanding how it develops.

Just like in Formula 1, expertise accumulates. Trust develops. Methods improve through shared experience.

Last year at the United States Grand Prix, hundreds of fans stopped by our Memory Wall to celebrate loved ones, share memories and leave messages of hope for the future.

Together, those messages created a powerful reminder of why the race against dementia is so vital. 💙

Our latest Research Forum brought together Race Against Dementia Fellows, motorsport leaders and industry innovators at the iconic Williams Racing headquarters to share ideas and drive progress.

Hosted by Natalie Pinkham, the day featured conversations with Race Against Dementia Chair Mark Stewart and former Williams Racing Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams on leadership, innovation and the mindset needed to challenge the status quo.

Our researchers also shared their work alongside experts from Dyson and beyond, exploring how cross-industry collaboration can unlock new approaches and accelerate breakthroughs in dementia research.

By bringing together expertise from across science, technology and motorsport, we’re helping researchers push boundaries and move closer to a cure for dementia. 🏁

What if we could reprogramme the brain’s immune cells to fight Alzheimer’s disease?

Dr Sonia Lombroso, from the University of California, is our newest Race Against Dementia Fellow and the first recipient of our joint Fellowship programme with the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sonia will use Nobel Prize-winning gene-editing tools to investigate how neurones (brain cells) interact with microglia, the brain’s immune cells. When microglia malfunction, they can accelerate neuronal damage in Alzheimer’s disease.

By uncovering what causes this malfunction, Sonia will investigate whether microglia can be reprogrammed to protect brain cells from damage.

It’s a bold approach to understanding Alzheimer’s disease, challenging existing thinking and opening up new possibilities for dementia research.

In a time when danger was widely accepted as part of racing, Sir Jackie Stewart challenged the status quo, pushing for safer barriers, dedicated emergency crews and circuit redesigns that helped save lives.

For the last 10 years he's brought that same bold, disruptive mindset to dementia research.
