Are you looking for a volunteer role that uses your HR experience or develops an HR interest? Do you want to make a huge difference to the lives of adults who struggle to read?
Read Easy Torbay & South Devon is seeking a new volunteer recruiter to join the team. This is a key role that would suit someone with a desire to connect with other people, has some experience of interviewing or recruiting and who has 3-4 hours per week to give. By recruiting the right sort of volunteers, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the longevity of the group and services we provide to the community.

Asked to describe her role, our outgoing recruiter says:

‘This voluntary role has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing people all with interesting backgrounds, with one thing in common, they all have the passion to help adults improve their reading skills.

My previous employment gave me admin, communication, organisation and interviewing skills which were vital for this role. I also like that I can manage my own diary, so it allows a good deal of flexibility allowing me to enjoy my retirement but still give time to such a worthwhile charity.

Read Easy Torbay & South Devon Management Team are a friendly and supportive group of people, and I have enjoyed my time with them immensely.’

2026 is the National Year of Reading and what better way to start the year than by celebrating our amazing reading coaches with a new year lunch together!

Before connecting over lunch, our literacy specialists, coordinators and coaches spent time exploring virtual coaching, carried out online using Zoom or Teams, including how the digital version of the Turning Pages manuals work alongside online reading resources and games to make the coaching sessions engaging and varied for our readers. We also discussed the additional support readers often need to access this type of coaching, like a chaperone to help with accessibility, guiding them through the technology and ensuring safe guarding policy is upheld too.

Did you catch us on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning?

Paul Mugford, a Reading Coach and Trustee, and former Team Leader of Read Easy Bristol, joined the programme to share a little about our work and how you can help adults learn to read.

Paul shared: “If somebody makes the very brave decision to ask for help, Read Easy is here to give the time and support to learn to read”

He added: “I have been involved for ten years and have helped five adults on the road to reading”

This is a fascinating report highlighting the importance of reading to an adult’s life chances. It reinforces the importance of Read Easy’s work in the community. Read Easy is the only organisation in the community which works 1:2:1 with adults to teach them to read.

The new thematic review Reading for Rehabilitation by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons has been published today. It clearly shows that reading isn’t just a “nice-to-have” — it’s central to rehabilitation and reducing reoffending.

This is a moment for leaders in the justice system to take notice: investing in literacy isn’t just right — it’s evidence-informed. If we are serious about rehabilitation, we must take literacy seriously.

Shannon Trust is already working to scale what works and make sure no one leaves prison without the fundamental life skill of reading. This report strengthens the case for sustained investment, partnership and leadership in prison literacy — and we stand ready to turn evidence into impact.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to not be able to read?

Read Easy Torbay and South Devon has a team of volunteer reading coaches supporting adults with their reading

It's life changing work.

One of those volunteers won a Stars of Teignbridge Award for Experimentation, sponsored by Claremont Manor.

Tim came up with a short story competition, where entries had to use the set words for each level of the reader manuals, creating a range of stories that were readable and also met the interests of their readers (as most books aimed at this level would be too childish).
