Fireworks can be frightening for rabbits, but a little preparation can help them feel safer when the bangs and flashes begin. ❤️

Get your bunnies ready:

🏡 Provide hiding places - cardboard boxes and tunnels give rabbits somewhere safe to retreat.
🔇 Reduce the noise and flashes - partly cover outdoor enclosures with a secure cover, keeping plenty of ventilation.
🏠 Plan ahead - if bringing rabbits indoors, prepare a quiet, secure space in advance so they can settle in familiar surroundings.
🌾 Keep things familiar - provide plenty of hay, fresh water and their usual enrichment.
👀 Check on them regularly - and contact your vet if you're worried about their health or behaviour.

Remember, fireworks can continue throughout the season, so don't leave preparations until the last minute!

Bad weather is on the way. Are your rabbits prepared? 🐰 🌧️

Strong winds and heavy rain can put outdoor rabbits at risk, so it’s important to be prepared before the weather takes a turn.

Keep checking the weather forecast over the coming days, especially for local warnings of strong winds and heavy rain. Planning ahead gives you time to make any changes needed and work out what you would do if conditions become unsafe.

Remember, it’s always better to be prepared before the bad weather arrives. 🐰💜

Thinking about getting rabbits? Make sure you’re prepared for the cost.🐰

Rabbits are a long-term commitment, and the costs of caring for them can add up quickly. Before bringing rabbits home, it’s important to consider both the initial set-up costs and what you’ll need to budget for throughout their lives.

For two rabbits, we estimate:

🏡 Initial set-up: around £930 - including suitable housing, neutering, food, bedding and other essentials.

🥬 Ongoing costs: around £70 a month - for hay, food, bedding, vegetables and insurance.

💉 Annual costs: around £220 - for vaccinations and holiday boarding.

🦷 Dental treatment: around £80 per rabbit - If needed.

That’s around £1,060 a year in typical ongoing and annual costs, before unexpected veterinary treatment. Over an average 10-year lifespan, properly caring for two rabbits could cost more than £11,550.

We always encourage people to consider adoption. Rabbits from reputable rescues will generally already be health checked, vaccinated and neutered, which can help reduce some of those initial costs.

Of course, unexpected expenses can happen. Pet insurance and an emergency fund can help you prepare for those unforeseen vet bills, while a suitable diet, plenty of hay and appropriate housing can help support good health.

Rabbits aren’t low-maintenance pets, and it’s important to make sure you’re ready for the financial commitment as well as the time and care they need.

🏆 WE WON! 🐰💜

This week, we attended the Charity Today Awards and were absolutely thrilled to win the Animal Welfare Award 2026!

Being shortlisted was a huge honour, so to be announced as the winner was incredibly special. This award recognises exceptional work to protect animals and improve welfare through education, advocacy, care and campaigning, and we’re so proud to see our work for rabbits recognised in this way.

From our Easter Bunny in Crisis campaign to Cuddles Turn Cruel, we’re committed to challenging misconceptions, raising awareness and campaigning for meaningful change to improve rabbits’ lives.

This achievement belongs to everyone who makes our work possible, from our veterinary team, volunteers and trustees to our partners, supporters and the wider rabbit-loving community. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past 26 years. 💜

This award has made us more determined than ever to keep fighting for a better future for rabbits. With the right knowledge, care and protections, positive change is possible.

It’s pretty much common knowledge that our patron Dr Emma Milne is fabulous. 🐰

She is widely recognised and hugely respected for her work to improve welfare across lots of companion animal species, including rabbits of course. She was made a Fellow of RCVS in 2021, but we are absolutely delighted to announce that she is now an Honorary member of The European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. Not just an Honorary member, but the FIRST honorary member. Did they make this just for her? We think so!

Emma has been given this recognition by ECAWBM in recognition of her continued and dedicated service to the promotion and public communication of Animal Welfare.

We want to thank Emma for everything she does for all animals, especially rabbits, and congratulate her on being appointed as an Honorary member of The European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. 🧡
