Late to the Groundswell recap? Yes, we are.

Are we still thinking about it? Also yes.

After a packed day of talks about regenerative farming, agroforestry, permaculture, climate action, farmer learning, woodland grazing and diversification, four things kept coming back to us:

#1. Regenerative agriculture is shaped by context. There is no single recipe that works everywhere.

#2. Learning takes root through practice, observation and sharing from one another. Small ideas can turn into giant movements.

#3. More people need opportunities to get onto the land and build practical experience.

#4. The future of farming is driven by nature!

It seems these themes span across every farmer and grower, from one acre market gardens, to thousand acre arable farms.

The ideas felt very familiar to us at WWOOF, and they’re something we want to keep exploring.

Every WWOOF exchange takes place in a particular landscape. People learn by getting involved, asking questions and spending time alongside those already caring for the land.

Life above the clouds hits different…

A quiet moment from Lurgan Farm, one of our WWOOF hosts in the hills above Aberfeldy, Highland Perthshire.

They’re a traditional organic hill farm, home to a rather wonderful team of working sheepdogs.

Sometimes you just have to stop and take it all in.

Somewhere between the bramble clearing and the open-fire lunches, five strangers became a woodland crew… 🌲

Last November, Andy welcomed his first group of WWOOFers to Dukes Barn in Monmouthshire.

They planted bluebells, pruned apple trees, built dead hedges, worked with freshly cut hazel and created a Norwegian-style wood stack that looked almost too tidy to use.

There was plenty of physical activities, but also plenty of laughter, shared meals and time gathered around the fire at the woodland camp.

By the evening, everyone would head back to the barn to cook, eat and swap stories beside the log fire, with a climbing wall, snooker table and steam room thrown in for good measure.

It is a lovely example of what can happen during a WWOOF stay: people arriving from different places, learning something new and leaving with shared memories, muddy boots and a few more friends than they started with.

Soil lovers, this one is for you!

WWOOF UK is working with to offer one WWOOF UK member a free place on their 5-day Natural Farming Course at the this October!

The place is worth £1,200 and is for someone who wants to dig a little deeper into soil health, Korean Natural Farming, indigenous microorganisms, fermentation, natural inputs and practical ways of working more closely with nature.

You do not need to own a farm to apply.

You might be a WWOOFer, host, grower, smallholder, community gardener, allotment grower, farm worker, or someone finding your way into land-based learning.

If you care about healthy soil, resilient growing systems and the quiet magic happening beneath our boots, we would love to hear your story.

Course dates: 16th - 20th October 2026

Selected participant announced: 15th August 2026

The free place covers course tuition only. Travel, accommodation, meals and personal expenses are not included.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for The Ground We Share at Stepney City Farm!

People came together for a day exploring land, learning, community and the many different ways people find their way into growing.

Some people were about to go WWOOFing for the first time. Some were already WWOOFing. Some were hosts. Others came through city farms, community gardens, land access projects and growing organisations across London and beyond. We even had people travel from as far as Portugal for the weekend.

The day began with our panel, Learning the land without owning it, with Andy Belfield from R-Urban Poplar, Rae Hippolyte from DIGS (Diversity In Green Spaces CIC), Tori Sherwin from Incredible Edible Lambeth, and Leander Frogley, a passionate WWOOFer and land volunteer.

Together, we explored some big questions. How do people begin a relationship with land? What makes a space genuinely welcoming? How do we remove barriers? What does stewardship mean when we think of ourselves less as owners, and more as guardians, helpers and caretakers?

After lunch, Stepney City Farm kindly put together a practical activity for the group, clearing wild rocket from a section of the farm and planting the next generation of onions for the months ahead.

Later in the afternoon, we split into smaller groups to share our own experiences, thoughts and possible next steps.

One thing felt very clear by the end of the day: there is no single route into land. WWOOFing is one route, but so are community gardens, city farms, food projects, campaigns, volunteering, paid land work, allotments and conversations that make the next step feel possible.

A huge thank you to Stepney City Farm, our panelists, everyone who came along, and all the organisations helping to keep these conversations alive.

Sometimes it starts with a cup of tea, a good question and a row of onions.

The Ground We Share is happening this Saturday at Stepney City Farm, and we’re excited to share the order of the day! 🌱

We’ll begin with a welcome and a panel conversation exploring how people can learn from and build a relationship with land without owning it. After lunch, Stepney City Farm will be leading a practical activity, with the group planting out spring onions on the farm.

Order of the day:

10:30–11:00 - Arrival, tea and welcome
11:00–12:30 - Learning the land without owning it panel
12:30–13:30 - Lunch and informal conversations
13:30–14:30 - Farm activity: planting out spring onions
14:30–15:30 - Final session: Finding our routes
15:30–16:00 - Open questions, next steps and close

It should be a warm, thoughtful and practical day, bringing together people interested in land access, volunteering, community growing, food, care and learning through doing.

We’re so excited to finally share something new… The Ground We Share.

A one-day gathering exploring land access, learning and community, hosted by WWOOF UK at Stepney City Farm.

At the heart of the day is a question we keep coming back to:
How do more people build a meaningful relationship with land when they do not own it?

On Saturday 4th July, we’ll be bringing together people and organisations interested in growing, volunteering, community food, land access and land-based learning.

We’ll explore the many routes into land, from volunteering to community growing, education, paid landwork, campaigning and starting growing projects of your own.

There will be a panel discussion, group conversations, time to meet others, and an optional activity with Stepney City Farm.

No farming or growing experience needed. Just curiosity, questions, and maybe shoes you don’t mind getting a bit muddy.
