💚 What a week - here's a throwback to Great Big Green Week by the Climate Coalition!

We were so inspired to see the Great Big Green Week brought communities together across the UK to celebrate nature and inspire sustainable action.

🟢Belfast City Hall lit up green
🪾Daniel the Puppet spread positivity through Chichester
🦈 Falmouth celebrated the ocean with a Basking Shark & Cuttlefish Procession
🚶‍♀️ Communities enjoyed wildlife, bird and ranger-led walks

More than a million people got involved, proving that small actions can create big change.

Let's keep the momentum going and continue protecting the nature we all love. 🌿

It's Great Big Green Week! 💚

From 6th-14th June, the nation is celebrating nature and community initiatives to encourage sustainability. Over the course of the week, communities and organisations are hosting events across the UK to showcase how people can get involved in protecting the environment.

Here are just some of the events taking place across the nation:

🌱 Bilston Wood Balsam Bash (09th June): Forth Rivers Trust is getting the local community involved near Edinburgh, helping to tackle the invasive non-native Himalayan Balsam that threatens native plants.

🚶‍♀️ Great Big Green Week Walk (11th June): Barn Owl Trust is hosting a walk across a wildlife reserve usually closed to the public to demonstrate efforts for local wildlife in Ashburton.

🍏 Community Orchards and Nature (11th June): Stamford Community Orchard Group is hosting an online talk about how community orchards benefit both communities and nature.

🤖 Rituals and Robots (13th June): Rituals and Robots is hosting an interactive community event to encourage conversation about technology and nature. Ambleside Action For A Future and Stem Bus are also taking part.

🛠️ Repair Café (14th June): Repair Café Conwy is hosting free repairs, drinks and cakes to help people fix their items and save them from going to landfill, giving them a new lease of life.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved with local sustainability initiatives near you!

It’s Stop Food Waste Day - the perfect time to start wasting less and saving more!

Did you know that 33% of all food produced globally is lost or wasted every year? Let’s do our bit to change that. Try these easy tips:

🥗 Plan before you shop: Create a weekly plan and check what you already have to build meals around it.

🧊 Store it right: Store fruits, vegetables and perishable items correctly to extend their shelf life. Use airtight containers, produce bags and storage techniques like blanching and freezing.

🔄 First in, first out: Move older items to the front of your fridge or cupboards so nothing gets forgotten.

🍽️ Right-size your portions: Cook what you need to avoid unnecessary leftovers.

🍲 Love your leftovers: Turn them into soups, stir-fries or next-day lunches.

🌿 Compost scraps: Give food waste a second life and reduce landfill.

Small changes can make a real difference to the planet and your pocket. Here are 5 easy tips to save water:

1️⃣ Take shorter showers 🚿
2️⃣ Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing up 🪥
3️⃣ Only run dishwashers & washing machines when completely full 🍽️
4️⃣ Fix dripping taps and leaks quickly 🔧
5️⃣ Use a watering can instead of a hose in the garden 🌱

On the back of Global Recycling Day, we wanted to share how you can recycle most efficiently.

Follow these golden rules... ♻️

✔️ Know your local rules
Recycling guidelines vary by council, so check your local authority website before tossing items in the bin.

✔️ Keep it clean and dry
Food and liquids contaminate recycling. A quick rinse can make a big difference.

✔️ Stop ‘wish-cycling’
If you’re unsure whether something can be recycled, it’s better to place it in general waste than risk contaminating a full load.

✔️ Watch for hidden traps
Items like thermal receipts, greasy cardboard, and plastic film often can’t be recycled.

✔️ Reduce plastic where possible
Avoid single-use plastics where you can—materials like glass and paper are much easier to recycle.

🌍 Let’s sort the facts from the fiction and help keep valuable materials in the loop.

Today is Global Recycling Day!

Think you know about recycling? You might be surprised. 🤔

It's time sort the facts from the fiction. Many of us mean well, but ‘wish-cycling’ - throwing items in the recycling bin and hoping for the best, can actually cause more harm than good.

Let’s bust a few common myths:

❌ Myth: Everything with the recycling symbol can be recycled
✅ Reality: The symbol often just shows the plastic type, not whether your local facility accepts it.

❌ Myth: Pizza boxes are always recyclable
✅ Reality: Grease and food contaminate cardboard. The clean lid can be recycled, but the greasy base usually can’t.

❌ Myth: Everything in the recycling bin gets recycled anyway
✅ Reality: One contaminated item can spoil an entire batch and send it to landfill.

❌ Myth: Recycling doesn’t matter because it all gets mixed together
✅ Reality: Properly sorted recyclables are in high demand and turned into new products every day.
