We recently refreshed Heathcote Garden at Royal Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital for South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust in time for an open‑garden event held in memory of Sarah Salisbury, a Specialist Palliative Care Nurse who died on February 14th 2025.

🌿 We first created this garden in 2023 as a space for staff, patients and visitors, and this update focused on preparing it carefully for the occasion.

🎨 With support from our community volunteers, we repainted the arbour benches and picnic benches and added a simple coffee table to make the seating area more practical and welcoming.

♻️ We installed handmade signs at both entrances to the garden and added garden art we created from reclaimed wood. We also built bird boxes from recycled pallet timber and fixed them to the fences to support small birds and increase biodiversity, keeping sustainability central to the improvements.

🌺 Plants grown from seed and cuttings and lovingly cared for by our Green Therapy group at the Stratford Hospital polytunnel were added to the planters to bring colour for the summer.

🌸 The team at CERU installed a new memorial bench and bird bath for Sarah, and donations from nurses and colleagues enabled them to add fresh plants and flowers around this area.

💙 This was a genuine team effort, with many people contributing time, skills and materials to prepare the garden for summer and create a fitting tribute for Sarah’s colleagues.

The NFU Mutual Claims Loss team joined us during Volunteers’ week for a purposeful volunteering day at The Garden of Arden, where the team came together in the great outdoors to make a meaningful difference to both the site and the wider community 🤝

Their visit supported the preservation and enhancement of our garden spaces, while also helping In2Theatre a local drama group for individuals with learning disabilities who are preparing their production of Wind in the Willows at the Bear Pit in Stratford‑upon‑Avon. We’re especially proud that two members of our Green Therapy group will be performing in the show 🎭

The team rolled up their sleeves to craft sustainable props and scenery, even transforming second‑hand chairs with a lively amphibious green and hand‑painted woodland‑themed designs 🎨

Out in the garden, they topped up raised beds with peat‑free compost, planted and seeded wildflower areas, potted up plants for future use, extended the orchard with new fencing, and added beautiful arching ivy towers to create a welcoming entrance to one of our community spaces 🌿

We thank the team for their creativity during the day and commitment to community. A special thank you to Chad Faulkner for organising the day and bringing such a wonderful team together 👍🏻

As a non‑profit charity, we’re deeply grateful for the incredible contribution of our volunteers 👏🏻

Our volunteer community is wonderfully diverse, with corporate teams, community groups, skilled specialists, students, retirees, and individuals seeking connection, purpose, or simply the joy of being outdoors 🌿

Each person brings their own experience, creativity, and enthusiasm, enriching our projects and enabling us to deliver meaningful activities across wellbeing, biodiversity, and community engagement 🙏🏻

Our volunteers remain the beating heart of our organisation, and their collective contribution continues to shape everything we achieve 💫

Thank you to everyone who has given their time, skills, and wholehearted support, we couldn’t do any of this without you 💚

We had two fantastic volunteering days in May with NFU Mutual, helping us enhance the green spaces we care for at Stratford‑upon‑Avon Hospital and The Garden of Arden 🌿

The teams refreshed fences, revived garden furniture, progressed our medicinal garden and prepared our wellbeing spaces for a busy summer of community use. A brilliant effort with real impact 🙏🏻

A big thank you to Sarah Whitehouse for organising the two teams from her division, and to all of the volunteers for their amazing contribution and hard work 💚

This Mental Health Awareness Week we’re celebrating the small steps that make a big difference 💫

Our Green Therapy programme continues to show just how powerful nature‑based activities can be for improving wellbeing. Every week, people join us to connect with others, build confidence, learn new skills and find calm through gentle gardening and time outdoors 🌿🌼

For many participants, Green Therapy offers a supportive space at a crucial moment in their mental health journey, whether they’ve just completed Talking Therapies, been referred by their GP, or are simply looking for a way to feel grounded and connected again 💙

We’re grateful to run Green Therapy sessions at Stratford‑upon‑Avon Hospital and Lillington Health Hub with Health & Wellbeing Hubs at SWFT, Mary Anne Evans Hospice in Nuneaton and The Garden of Arden 🙂

We're delighted to share the success of our recent Food Champions programme, delivered in partnership with Kind Communities Kind Food, a Warwickshire County Council initiative supporting food security, healthy eating and sustainable, local food choices 🥬🥕

Over eight weeks, we brought people together in the Lomas Community Room and the Garden of Wellbeing at Stratford-upon-Avon Hospital for hands-on workshops led by local nutritionists, Warwickshire Public Health colleagues and our Forest of Hearts team 🤝

Our participants explored:
✔️The Warwickshire Food Strategy
✔️Cooking skills and nutrition
✔️The impact of diet on health and wellbeing
✔️Special dietary needs
✔️Growing your own food
✔️Sustainability
✔️Local challenges around food access and health inequalities

To support people during the cost-of-living crisis, each participant also received an air fryer or slow cooker to help make healthy, affordable meals at home🍴

We ended the programme with a joyful celebration at The Garden of Arden, where graduates received certificates from Deputy Mayor Clir Sam McNaught-Barrow and had the chance to meet some of Warwickshire's wider network of Food Champions 💫

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Mike Slemensek and Rina Sarna for helping to organise the speakers and workshop leads, to Amy Upchurch for coordinating the use of the Lomas Community Room, and to James Morrison, Michelle Wykes, Tamorah Lassam-Jones, Sian Owen and Jon Knight for their invaluable contributions throughout the programme 🙌🏻

🙂This week we welcomed Joy Godwin and her ESOL students (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for a hands‑on session in the Garden of Wellbeing at Stratford-upon-Avon Hospital.

🌿Two groups of students joined us for a garden scavenger hunt, helping them build confidence with English vocabulary while exploring plants, textures and wildlife features.

🎨 They then decorated wooden plaques made from reclaimed pallet wood, writing messages of positivity and reflections on what they enjoyed in the garden. These will become part of a small garden art installation for everyone who visits the space.

💭 A wonderful afternoon of learning, creativity, connection and community. Thank you to Joy and her brilliant learners for bringing such warmth and enthusiasm to the garden.

We recently hosted the Grafton PLC team, who swapped the boardroom for our off‑grid meeting space for their team meeting 🌍

After the meeting, several of them joined us for some hands‑on environmental team‑building, planting ten apple trees to enrich the orchard and setting freshly coppiced willow whips to begin a living archway along one of our nature pathways. 🌳🌿

Inspired by the blue t**s nesting onsite, everyone left with a bird‑box kit made from repurposed pallet wood to create habitats in their own gardens too 🐦

A huge thank you to Rosie Howells and the Grafton PLC team for choosing to spend their day with us again, and to Thatchers Cider for supporting our Community Orchard Project with the apple trees 🍏

The trees will now be lovingly maintained by our Green Therapy groups and volunteers 💚

We hosted the first NFU Mutual volunteering day of the year through our ongoing partnership with the company 💚

The team of seventeen volunteers achieved so much in the day to make such a positive impact on the site. They:

🌿 Created the beginnings of a medicinal garden area by constructing raised bed planters

🌳 Planted Beech & Hawthorn trees to strengthen and extend our hedgerows

♻️ Upcycled and repurposed items to save them from going to landfill

✂️ Shredded and composted all garden waste to create our own compost

A huge thank you to Richard Gubby and Sarah for organising the NFU Mutual team and to all the volunteers for their energy, teamwork, and commitment on the day. We look forward to welcoming the next groups of volunteers in the coming months 🙂

We welcomed a brilliant team of volunteers from National Grid for a hands‑on day of tree planting as part of their employee volunteering initiative 🤝

The team:
🌿 Planted 192 Hawthorn tree saplings, extending our hedgerow and strengthening the wildlife corridor
♻️ Shredded garden waste to kick‑start our new compost bay with essential brown materials
🍕 Shared freshly cooked pizza, giving everyone time to connect and reflect on the impact of the day

We’re incredibly grateful to the National Grid volunteers for their energy and commitment to supporting the biodiversity of the site. Many thanks to Gaynor Shingler for organising 💚
