Whitby & District Model Railway Club

Whitby & District Model Railway Club A group of railway modellers who meet in Sleights twice a month on Saturdays (See dates posted on our page.)

The Whitby and District Model Railway Club was formed in 1988, by a group of railway modellers living in Whitby and the surrounding area. The club meets at Sleights Village Halls, approximately fortnightly on Saturday afternoons from 1pm to 5pm. Currently, the club has several layouts built to a range of gauges, including O and OO. We also have a number of members who work in N, HO, OO, EM, P4, O-

14 and O. The club meetings are informal, with members either using the club layouts, bringing their own projects to work on or just popping in for a social cup of tea! We have a wide membership base, with people regularly traveling from the Teesside, Scarborough and Pickering areas, as well as people more locally from the Whitby area. Our current members have a wide variety of skills and interests, and regularly pass on these skills through helping those who are less experienced. We also usually have at least one ongoing club layout project, with all members encouraged to get involved. The club would welcome new members and would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to join us.

Another layout that is appearing at the Goathland Model Railway and Toy show is Badger’s Wharf. The show is on Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th July from 10 - 4 at Goathland Village Hall.

Badger’s Wharf is an 3’ x 2’ n gauge layout, which was built so I could take a layout away with me on holiday in my motorhome. It folds in half, the hinges are covered by removable buildings. It is 12 vdc analogue, with the points mechanically operated by pushrods under the board. There is an optional 5 road add-on fiddle yard at the left hand end. The layout can be operated from the front and rear.

The layout features a small station with a through line and a bay platform. There is a small canal basin surrounded by warehouses, with a dedicated siding, and there is the village pub!

It appeared in the Summer edition of Model Rail, No 329 2024.

We are holding our club show on Saturday 18th July & Sunday 19th July 2026 from 10-4 in the Goathland Village Hall (YO225JS),
Admission this year is £5, with accompanied children going for free, and yes, we do take cards!
There will be 7 layouts plus and extensive display of vintage toys. Including; Lego, Bayko, Steampunk, Retro Robots, Micronauts, Zoids, Transformers.

One of the layouts at this years show is Chop Gate (4mm scale, EM gauge) by Paul Gallon. It depicts a "what if" scenario, where the York, Helmsley and Stokesley Railway (YHSR) was built by the NER and opened in 1882. Running through the North York Moors via Bilsdale, the fictionalized line connects Helmsley to Stokesley, with several stations including Chop Gate.
Despite the lack of Ironstone this far west there was still plenty of traffic to keep the line reasonably busy, a cattle train ran from
the Pickering line to Stokesley on market days, through passenger trains from Teesside to Scarborough and a Saturdays only
York to Stockton and return, reversing at Helmsley. The track plan of Chop Gate is inspired by real local stations like Snainton, Hovingham and Kettleness.
