It's Volunteers' Week! 🎉

This week we're celebrating our brilliant volunteers, who give their time to supporting people experiencing profound loneliness.

Every week, our volunteers make friendly phone calls and write news-filled letters to isolated people all over the UK. For some of our clients, it's their only regular social contact.

We also have volunteers who help us in the office and behind the scenes. And our primary school volunteers create beautiful cards and artwork which we send to clients through our Pupil Pals programme.

Fundraising news 🎉

We are delighted to have received a £500 grant from easyfundraising.org.uk! Along with donations from our supporters using easyfundraising for their online shopping, this means we've raised £600 this month, which will go directly to our work to end loneliness and isolation.

Our volunteers are amazing!

These are some of the beautiful handmade cards and envelopes created recently by volunteers for our Letterbox pen-pal programme.

Yvonne made the envelopes with her church group, while Thelma created the cards with her sister-in-law Rita who is one of our Letterbox befrienders.

Our clients are going to love receiving these beautiful cards and envelopes – thank you, Yvonne, Thelma and Rita, your creativity is inspiring!

Befriending for people affected by cancer

We’re really pleased to be one of the providers for the Lingen Davies Cancer Support wellbeing programme, supporting people in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Mid Wales who are affected by cancer.

Our Programmes Assistant Sarah recently attended Cancer Champions training offered by Lingen Davies, which helps encourage open conversation and communication about the importance of cancer screening to improve early diagnosis.

Sarah said: "It was such an informative course. It will help the Omega team discuss the health needs of the people we work with more confidently, particularly in relation to cancer screenings and monitoring. Thank you Lingen Davies for a very useful and practical training session.”

Donation of wonderful cards

Thank you, Paper Rose, for your donation of wonderful cards!

As part of our support for lonely and isolated people, we like to send birthday cards to all our clients, many of whom don’t have family or friends around them to help celebrate birthdays. We can also provide blank cards to our pen pal clients or volunteers when needed, and we pay all postage for our pen pal letters too, to help keep costs down. Paper Rose, your cards will be appreciated by many people!

New Director of Omega

A big welcome to Omega’s new Director, David Crosby, who joins Omega this week.

David said: “I’m excited to be joining Omega, and am looking forward to working with the staff team, our volunteers, the Board of Trustees and the people we support to take Omega on the next phase of its growth to reduce the impact of loneliness across the UK.”

David has extensive experience of senior leadership in several national charities, including Teenage Cancer Trust and Breast Cancer Now. More recently he was Chief Officer for Shropshire-based Partners in Care, a not-for-profit member organisation for adult social care providers.
