I think you’ll agree that Cherida’s story will really touch anyone who reads her reason for being part of the North Shropshire Lingen Davies Committee - and we’ve also been made aware of how much work is already going on to raise funds for cancer care in our county of Shropshire. If you’d like to work along side us in any way, we’d love to have you on our team in any shape or form!!

Since my Husband's bowel cancer diagnosis in February 2020 aged 31, I have seen first hand how imperative cancer charities are and the impact and guidance they demonstrate throughout a cancer journey, not only to patients, but for friends and families . Their tireless work and support is second to none. Therefore, it is incredibly close to my heart and vitally important to me to give as much time as I can to Lingen Davies, to help make a real difference.

How far could you walk without sleep?

Three weeks from today I will attempt my most ambitious ramble to date: 75 miles (120km) in 36 hours with no sleep! I took up walking seriously 6 years ago. I am 60 years old.

The route will be the entire length of the Shropshire Way Main Route North – a loop that starts and ends at the Kingsland Bridge in Shrewsbury. On the map here that is stages 10b + 11 / 12 / 13 / 14 / 15. The official guidebook of the Shropshire Way divides the trail into five individual day walks varying in distance from 12 – 17 miles each. I intend to combine these walks into one enormous trek! The route takes in many highlights of lesser-known northern Shropshire including Haughmond Abbey, Grinshill, Wem, three canals, Ellesmere and the Shrophire Lake District, the Welsh border town Llanymynech, the River Vyrnwy, Melverley Church, Nescliffe and Montford Bridge, culminating in a final stretch along a picturesque part of the River Severn back into Shrewsbury.

Madness? Probably.

But my motivation is not only the distance itself, but also to support a good cause. I’m fundraising for the Lingen Davies Sunflower Appeal, which will finance the development of a new and much-needed cancer treatment centre at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. Please read the whole story in the link below. I would be delighted if you’d consider donating! If you can’t donate, please share this post with people, who you think might. Thanks!

Val Edwards , Lingen Davies Trustee and Founder of the North Shropshire Committee
I have been involved with fundraising for Lingen Davies since they started but my reason for becoming deeply committed became personal in 2003 when my husband Richard was diagnosed with bowel cancer. At that time cancer treatment was becoming increasingly delivered to outpatients. The hospital staff had even given up their staff room so more people could be treated (something that deeply affected Richard) and Lingen Davies was busy raising money to build a new outpatients facility at the RSH. Richard and I ran several events including a ball, and he raised over £10,000. Sadly Richard lost his battle with cancer in 2007, but his children and I continue to support Lingen Davies in his memory and I know he would have been so pleased when the centre was opened in 2012.
Then in 2019 i was honoured and delighted to be asked to become a Lingen Davies Trustee. The work the charity does is vital as the incidence of cancer increases and as well as raising money for new facilities and equipment they also have an extensive Wellbeing Programme which delivers support for those on a cancer journey and their friends and families. I am so proud to be part of what they do, and the formation of the North Shropshire Committee will help focus their efforts in this area of the wider region they serve

Linda Arthan , Committee Member
Each of us who have volunteered to be part of the Fund Raising Committee for North Shropshire have a reason to want to give something back, on behalf of a precious soul who has had the need to access the help, support and treatments Lingen Davies Cancer Care Centre provides.

So my first Musical ‘Bit of a Do’ was held at Criftins Parish Hall in 2018. I was so pleased that Graham, my big brother, was there to feel so much love and support for him that evening, from so many family and friends.

Sadly Graham lost his 18 month battle with cancer later that year but I know with all the future events I’ve organised, for Lingen Davies, Graham continues to be central to these special evenings, which just keep growing and growing. And now to be part of a wider potential for fund raising in the whole of North Shropshire, where we aim to raise £50,000 over the next year feels extraordinary!
