👷 BIG SITE MEETING TODAY! 🌳

Things are really starting to move now at the Abbey Foregate Pocket Park - and this morning Martin (The Buttermarket) and Seb (Shrewsbury BID) had a big get-together on site to work through the final details before the next stages begin! 🙌

With the ground now cleared and levelled, today was about measuring up, checking positions and making sure all the different elements of the Pocket Park come together exactly as planned.

And that's what we love about this project - so many different local people and organisations are bringing their skills and expertise together to make it happen. ❤️

A huge thank you in particular to Simon at the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed Charity, who was back on site today. Their brilliant team will be providing and installing the reclaimed wrought-iron fencing and gates for the Community Gardens, as well as creating the seating furniture for the Pocket Park. 🔨🪚

There’s plenty still to do, but over the coming weeks you'll start to see the bare site transformed with:

🌸 New trees, planting & landscaping
🪑 Public seating and our feature circular seating area
🌿 The Community Gardens at the rear
🖤 Wrought-iron fencing & gates
🚲 Secure cycle parking
🚲 Brompton bike hire facilities
✨ Festoon lighting
📶 Free public WiFi

Plating up for a whole bunch of hungry Shedders who have been volunteering doing community projects for Charities, Schools and Community Groups around Shrewsbury. We are grateful as ever to Walsh's Butchers Shrewsbury for their generosity in helping us lay on a weekly free hot meal on ‘Tuck in Tuesday’.

❤️ ANOTHER ABBEY FOREGATE LANDMARK IS GETTING SOME TLC!

You may have spotted that the much-loved old red telephone box in Abbey Foregate has seen better days… but hopefully not for much longer! ☎️

We're delighted that the talented team at Shrewsbury Men’s Shed Charity are getting involved, bringing their skills, craftsmanship and expertise to help restore this little piece of Abbey Foregate history back to its former glory. 👏

And this isn’t the only way they’re helping to make a difference locally.

Shrewsbury Men’s Shed are also involved in the Abbey Foregate Pocket Park, where their expertise is being put to fantastic use providing and installing the reclaimed wrought-iron fencing and gates for the community gardens, as well as the seating furniture. 🌳🌷

It’s brilliant to see traditional skills and local know-how being used on projects that will make a real, visible difference to Shrewsbury.

✨ Wednesday Wonders ✨

Each week we’ll be shining a spotlight on a couple of our favourite finds from the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed Pop-Up Shop!

🖼️ This week’s first find: A beautiful limited edition print, Memories of Knutsford, by artist Martin Stuart Moore – a wonderful piece for any art lover.

🌿 Standout #2: This absolutely magnificent giant Monstera! It didn’t stay on the shop floor for long… one of our volunteers Tash couldn’t resist giving it a new home!💚

📸 We’ve even included a photo of Tash’s hand next to one of the leaves for a bit of size comparison… because photos really don’t do this monster Monstera justice! 🌿😂

Who knows what next week’s hidden gems will be? That’s the beauty of our Pop-Up Shop – every week brings something completely different!

We are so proud to be a part of this project to help make a wonderful space for the local community to enjoy for many years to come... exciting times ahead 🛠🥳

🌳 We've got exciting plans to bring more public space to Abbey Foregate.

The vacant, fenced-off plot between Hair 21 and the railway bridge is being transformed into a new 'pocket park,' featuring seating, planting, free high-speed WiFi, cycle storage and a Brompton bike hire station in the front, and a community garden to the rear to give local residents without their own outdoor patch the chance to get their hands in the soil!

The project is a partnership with Martin Monahan, who is making the land available free of charge to Shrewsbury BID, and working alongside Shrewsbury Men's Shed to transform the site. It's funded through the Shrewsbury Big Town Plan Partnership, with capital funding from UK Government via the UKSPF Supporting Local Community & Place Fund.

Site clearance begins TODAY, and the space is expected to open to the public by the end of September.
