ERRA MEETING GUEST SPEAKERS - RNLI REDCAR - TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH.

Redcar lifeboat station has the distinction of being one of the oldest of all the lifeboat stations maintained round the coasts of the British Isles.
As a lifeboat station, Redcar precedes the RNLI itself by over 20 years, being established in 1802. The town has the oldest surviving lifeboat in the world, the Zetland, housed in the old lifeboat station on the Esplanade.
224 years later, the latest incarnations of RNLI lifeboats are still saving lives at sea from the current lifeboat station on the Esplanade.

At next week's ERRA meeting, 7pm on Tuesday September 8th, our guest speakers will be Redcar RNLI's Dave C***s (Chairman of Station) and Mike Picknett (Lifeboat Operations Manager). Dave and Mike will be telling us all about the history of the lifeboat station and of today's current RNLI operations.

Get on court with your family and have some fun. We’ll provide modified balls and rackets for the younger ones and coaches will be on hand to give you some pointers if you want them.

THE HISTORY OF THE PADDLING POOL

We need a helping hand with some Stray Paddling Pool history if anyone out there can assist.

We're doing some improvement work in the area during the '26/'27 close season. As part of the work, we will be adding some written and further pictorial history of the paddling pool, from it's inception to the present day, in addition to the old pictures that you can currently see below the Marske side internal pool area pathway.

Any photographs that you are happy to share, both historic and personal, would be greatly appreciated along with any timelines, information and anecdotes you may have.

The 3 old photographs that currently line the pool area are attached. Can you name the era and have you any observations about them?

Also attached are some photographs taken this morning of the random lumps of stone in the area. There are various different stones, including sandstone with hand chiselled grooves and old furnace refractory bricks similar to those in the Pink Path wall between the paddling pool and Green Lane. These are said to be from the old Warrenby blast furnaces which closed in 1968.

When was the paddling pool first opened?
When was the original Pink Path wall built?
When was the paddling pool reduced in size?
When were the current dwarf walls built in the paddling pool?

The Redcar Stray Pink Path is now fully accessible again. The defective 100m marker blocks have been repaired and have added expansion joints to ensure a longer lifespan.

The 1500m marker plate disappeared a while ago. If anyone knows the whereabouts of it, contact the council and they will replace it. It will save sourcing a new one.

In July, Martin and Paul from our East Redcar Resident's Association, attended a Redcar and Cleveland Council community safety drop in session. They reported some serious, repetitive and worsening examples of anti social behaviour and criminality around East Redcar, including some very specific events around Zetland Park shelter and public toilets, Borough Park and Redcar Cemetery.

As a consequence of the drop in, ERRA and local community leads from Friends of Zetland Park, Friends of Redcar Cemetery and Friends of Borough Park met with Cleveland Police and Redcar and Cleveland Council at the Zetland Park shelter/public toilets a fortnight ago to explain and show in more detail, the reported events.

All of our long established local parks, residents and cemetery groups are community volunteers. We are passionate about what we do and for many years now, we have worked hard to help fund and improve our green spaces and local environment for everyone to enjoy.

Too much of our time and energy is now being taken up with negatives, continuously painting out graffiti, reporting anti social behaviour and criminal damage in our areas.This is taking us away from us being able to make the best of what we have.

The short answer when we ask for support from the council or the police is CAN'T.
The reasons put forward are, again in short, NOT ENOUGH FUNDS, NOT ENOUGH NUMBERS.

Our response to them is, again in short, if we all work together then we CAN.

During the meeting in Zetland Park we took the council and police into the gents public toilets to show the lewd graffiti, the toilet doors with no locks, the leaking urinals and the urine pools on the floor that have been there many months. The stickers on the floor from covid.

We are unable to post our photographs of the graffiti due to it's lewd, racist and hate crime content.

The council officer had to leave the toilets before looking at the graffiti in the second toilet because of the stench.

The toilets are supposed to be cleaned 3 times a day, they are never properly cleaned. The same graffiti has been reported to the council more than once. When talking to council operatives, the cleaners aren't allowed to use certain cleansers to remove the graffiti. Another council department not responsible for cleaning the toilets are.
The graffiti we showed the council and police at the meeting was still there yesterday.

This is not an expose, and no individual is to blame for where we are now. The local residents know 'where we are now' and we have known for a long time now. Even the council staff have given up reporting incidents to the police and avoid using the toilets in Zetland Park because of continued drug use, stench and the general state of disrepair.

Our message to everyone out there, including council staff of all levels, is to please ring Cleveland Police on 101 and report all incidents of anti-social behaviour and crime, no matter how long it takes to get through.
You will be sent a crime number. If you have photographs or evidence to support your report, let the operator know. A police officer will then contact you and send a link for you to upload your photographs. If you are witnessing the event as it is taking place, then call Cleveland Police on 999.

Repairs to the x100m markers along the Redcar Stray Pink Path started yesterday. The contractors are putting in an extra expansion joint down the centre of the markers.

For those familiar with the Pink Path of old...some remnants can still be seen on the beach and near the path itself.

We've attached some photographs of the transition of the Pink Path to it's current form during the last sea wall construction work. What memories do you have of the path over the years and do you have any other old photographs that include it?

We also have our latest Coastal Garden low cost feature alert..
An old float and some rope is ready for you to upcycle beside the litter bin near the Paddling Pool.

'The Mayor and Mayoress of Redcar, the Ald. and Mrs. T.A. Dougal, lead the Mayor's Sunday procession to divine service at Redcar Parish Church.'

Taken in June 1951, the scene shows the procession turning into the churchyard, the run of curved shops on the Redcar Lane / Lord Street junction and the old wall of what is now St.Peter's care home, formerly the old vicarage. Was the lighter coloured modern building a church hall?

Julie's father, fisherman Gary Mountain, had a baithouse with Fred Stamp across from St. Peter's next to the old Redcar bus station for many years. Fred lived on Durham Road. Gary is pictured below with a sizeable lobster on land, Fred with a couple at sea.

Thank you all for your patience during the recent Redcar Stray Paddling Pool council repair period.

We had a lovely re-opening party day for last Friday. The weather was positively Hawaiian with the heat and some rollers coming ashore on the beach 🌊
Alison, Liz and Paul popped down early doors to dress up the pool area, add a little Hawaiian colour and to welcome our first visitors 🤝

It was a great atmosphere throughout the day with lots of families and children splashing about, having picnics and lots of free fun.

One little girl said it was the best day ever!!

The pool area was spotless when we went down on Friday evening. The council operatives had brought some extra wheelie bins and bin bags down and a family from the Coast Road tidied up before going home.

The pool is now open Friday, Saturday and Sunday every weekend until mid September.

Our first early birds on our second weekend today, Nia, Steph and Jo came across from Billingham, Nunthorpe and Acklam with half a dozen youngsters ranging from 1 to 6. Looks like they are all ready to 'slide' into the pool!

The forecast is a good one so come on down and enjoy the sunshine.
