Remembrance Poppy Wreaths

Important notice for ordering wreaths for this year.

The Poppy Appeal have reduced the number of wreaths available. The majority of the armed forces, youth organisations etc. already have the logo inserts available. If you are wanting a special insert printing for a C or K wreath, then please contact the Redcar Poppy Appeal as soon as possible, so you can be sent the appropriate form. Orders for these have to be approved by the Poppy Appeal by the end of August therefore we would suggest that the form is submitted by the end of July at the latest to give time for any queries.

Wreathes will have to collected from the Redcar British Legion Office within Coatham Road Social Club. Payment will be by card, QR code, cash or cheque. Payment via Bank Transfer is as a last resort & this will be by arrangement only as bank details may have changed if you have paid this way in the past.

Orders for Remembrance are best submitted as soon as possible but certainly no later than the end of July.

The Poppy Appeal Team can be contacted on [email protected]

Big thank you to Emma from Daisy Mae's Vintage Tea Rooms, near the Beacon in Redcar for accommodating us all this morning when residents and staff from Lister House, RBL Care Home Ripon, came for a day out today. A proper pot of tea with yummy scones and cake, with one resident declaring the dark hot chocolate was the best they'd had for a long time. The sour cherry cake and ruby hot chocolate went down very nicely! 🍰

What a lovely morning, with a visit from residents and staff from RBL Lister House in Ripon, who are on a day trip to Redcar.

Today sees the anniversary of Operation Overlord - D Day in 1944. It was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The statistics of D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord, are staggering. The Allies used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. The landings marked the start of a long and costly campaign in north-west Europe, which ultimately convinced the German high command that defeat was inevitable.

Early on 6 June, Allied airborne forces parachuted into drop zones across northern France. Ground troops then landed across five assault beaches - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. By the end of the day, the Allies had established a foothold along the coast and could begin their advance into France.

We remember today those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them

On D-Day, 6 June 1944, Allied forces launched a combined naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France. Codenamed Operation 'Overlord', the Allied landings on the Normandy beaches marked the start of a long and costly campaign to liberate north-west Europe from German occupation.
