South West LGBT+ Conference 2026 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

The first ever SW LGBT+ Conference was a smash success. Previously a “Weekender”, but now big enough to be called a conference! LGBT+ NEU members gathered to celebrate workplace successes, discuss solutions to common problems we face, and work together to build an inclusive community for staff and students alike. We heard more about the long-awaited Coming Out Guide, alongside many other fantastic CPD workshops over the weekend. Our very own Kayleigh (Vice President & Membership Officer) delivered an excellent workshop on Intersectionality, and Sammy (LGBT+ Officer) delivered a workshop on Constructive Disagreement. Finally, we created some artwork of Q***r Icons as part of the Union’s Arts and Minds campaign. All in all, a fabulous weekend of union learning and q***r joy! 🌈

District & Branch OGM - final meeting of the 25/26 academic year!
📅 Date: Monday 29th June 2026
⏰ Time: 5-7pm
📍Location: Copthorne Hotel

Looking forward to seeing new and old faces at our final meeting of the year! 🤩

This meeting will consist of:
1. The district section - Discuss and be updated on education issues and news. Find out all about what’s going on within our district, regionally & nationally.
2. The branch section - Branch issues are all around your workplace issues and bargaining. If you have workplace concerns or want to know more about branch or want to get more involved, this is the section for you.
3. A meal at Toot (If we haven’t convinced you with what we will be discussing, at least come along for the free food!🤣) DM us for the sign up link to pre order your food ☺️

👥 New to meetings and a bit unsure what to do? 👥
We run a Buddy system where one of the committee will be in contact with you in the days leading up to the meeting so you know someone there. They can come and meet you before the meeting begins so you don’t have to walk in alone. We understand going to a meeting for the first time can be daunting!
Like the sound of this? Please DM us so Lowenna or Charlotte (our Social Media Officers) can get back to you and pass on the relevant contact details ☺️

This weekend Disability Officer Charlotte was in Birmingham for the Annual Disabled Members Conference.

Day 1 was filled with workshops on winning reasonable adjustments for neurodiverse staff, building coalitions, stopping school cuts, a panel speaking against the far right and what this means for disabled educators and people as well as a Q&A with our general secretary Daniel Kebede. The day ended with a quiz in which team South West came 3rd 🙌🏼

Day 2 started with an address from our President Ed Harlow. We then split into our regions to discuss what we will be taking back to our workplaces, districts and regions. We agreed that there should be another South West Disabled Members Conference so keep your eyes out for that 👀. The conference ended with a debate over 4 different motions and us voting on which will be the protected motion to be debated at Annual Conference 2027.
