🌺 IT'S POPPY APPEAL TIME! 🌺

And we're off! ❤️

Today marks the launch of the 2026 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, and we'd like to wish all our wonderful branches, Poppy Appeal Organisers, collectors and volunteers across Devon the very best of luck over the coming weeks!

Whether you're standing in the rain with a collection tin, organising poppies behind the scenes, delivering boxes or simply giving up your time to help, YOU are what makes the Poppy Appeal possible. 👏

🌺 So why do we do it?

Because remembrance isn't just about looking back. It's about being there today, tomorrow and whenever our Armed Forces community needs us.

Every poppy worn, every penny donated and every hour volunteered helps the Royal British Legion provide vital support to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

So, Devon, let's get those poppies out, those collection tins rattling and those smiles ready!

🎖️ IT’S CADET WEEK! 🎖️

This week, we’re turning the spotlight firmly onto the next generation. 👏

Across Devon, thousands of hours are spent by cadets and the brilliant adult volunteers who support them — learning new skills, taking on challenges, building confidence, developing leadership and, importantly, becoming active members of their communities.

Whether they wear Army green, RAF blue or Sea Cadet navy, these young people are very much part of our wider Armed Forces family. And here in Devon, we want to do much more to embrace them. ❤️

We’ll be sharing more about cadets throughout the week, including the fantastic work and the support given to the cadet community across the South West by Wessex RFCA.

And there’s an opportunity for someone within Devon RBL too… 👀

🔎 We’re looking for a new Devon County Youth Officer!

Someone enthusiastic who can help us build stronger links between our Branches, local cadet units and other youth organisations across the county.

Because engagement with the Armed Forces community shouldn’t begin when somebody leaves the military.

It can begin much, much earlier.

So, if your Branch already has a great relationship with its local cadets, tell us about it! Send us your pictures and stories and let us celebrate them this week. 📸

And if your Branch doesn’t have a relationship with a local cadet unit yet… perhaps Cadet Week is the perfect excuse to say hello. 👋

Our Festival of Remembrance 2026 is getting closer, and we really want to see Falklands Hall at CTCRM Lympstone packed for what promises to be a very special evening.

With the magnificent Salamanca Band and Bugles of The Ri**es, music, stories and a powerful Act of Remembrance, this is far more than a concert — it's an evening to come together and remember those who served, those who came home, and those who didn't.

Bob has officially completed his 100 miles to mark 100 years of the Plymstock branch of the Royal British Legion! 💯❤️

That’s 100 miles of determination, commitment and probably a fair few sore legs along the way! 😂

A huge WELL DONE, BOB! 👏🌺

What a fantastic way to celebrate 100 years of the branch and raise awareness of everything the Royal British Legion does for our Armed Forces community.

Today, Bob Goodman gets on his bike and begins an incredible challenge — 100 miles to celebrate 100 years of the Royal British Legion!

Starting today, Bob will be cycling to raise much-needed funds for The Royal British Legion, helping support veterans, serving personnel and their families. 🇬🇧

It’s a fantastic challenge, and we’ll be cheering him on every pedal of the way! 💪🚴‍♂️

🚴‍♂️ 100 MILES FOR 100 YEARS! 🚴‍♂️

Now THIS deserves some serious Devon support! ❤️

Plympton & District Branch President Bob Goodman, aged 73, is getting on his bike and taking on an incredible 107-mile ride from Ilfracombe to Plympton to celebrate the Branch’s Centenary. 🌹💯

And because apparently cycling 107 miles at 73 isn’t impressive enough 😳, Bob is also raising money for two fantastic causes:

🏊 The Ripple Effect – providing free weekly swimming sessions for veterans in a safe, relaxed and supportive environment.

🌹 Plympton & District Branch Centenary – helping the Branch mark an amazing 100 years of the Royal British Legion in Plympton.

VJ DAY 81 🇬🇧

Today, we remember the 81st anniversary of Victory over Japan Day and, with it, the end of the Second World War.

For those who served in the Far East, however, the road to victory was long, brutal and often fought in conditions almost impossible to imagine.

They became known as the Forgotten Army – but today, and every day, we make sure they are anything but forgotten.

We remember those who fought in Burma and across the Far East. Those who endured captivity as prisoners of war. Those who never came home, and those who did, carrying memories that stayed with them for the rest of their lives.

81 years on, their courage, sacrifice and service still matter.

Today we say simply: thank you. We remember you.

RIP Shipmate

We are deeply saddened by reports confirming the death of Nirmal "Nims" Purja MBE and his team.

A former member of the Royal Navy's Special Boat Service and the first Gurkha to join its ranks, Nims exemplified courage, determination and service throughout his remarkable career.

Earlier this year we had the privilege of hearing from him firsthand at his first UK speaking event. An inspiring individual who leaves behind an incredible legacy.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all those affected by this tragic loss.

Today I received the most thoughtful gift from the Royal British Legion branches of the Torbay Group, and I honestly can't put into words how much it means to me.

Over the past year I've had the privilege of getting to know so many incredible people. You've welcomed me, supported me, made me laugh, and most importantly, become friends. It's never just been about meetings or branch business – it's been about the people, and that's what I'll miss the most.

Thank you all for your kindness, generosity and friendship. Your gift will always remind me of the wonderful memories we've shared together.

This isn't goodbye though. I'll still be around and I'll see many of you at the County Quarterly meetings – just this time as a branch member rather than your MEO.

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart. It has truly meant the world to me. ❤️🌺
