What does resilience really look like?

Recently, Melissa Harriman owner of Bella-Rose Accessories joined Tina Jesson on the Innovative People Podcast to share a powerful story of courage, determination, and transformation.

Following a severe car accident, Melissa’s life changed dramatically. Multiple spinal surgeries affected her confidence, independence, and ability to do many of the things she once took for granted. Like many people facing life-changing circumstances, she found herself withdrawing from the world and rarely wanting to leave her home.

Everything began to change when her carer encouraged her to attend a Skilled Hands workshop.

What started as a 12-week millinery course became the beginning of a remarkable journey. Melissa went on to complete our Jewellery Making and Bag Making programmes, developing new skills, building confidence, and reconnecting with her creativity.

But perhaps the most inspiring part of her story is what happened next.

Using the skills she learned, Melissa started her own small business and successfully sold her handmade products at her children’s school fair. Her determination and entrepreneurial spirit earned her the Skilled Hands Woman of the Moment Award, recognising not only her achievements but the resilience that made them possible.

Stories like Melissa’s remind us that empowerment is about more than learning a skill. It is about rebuilding confidence, creating opportunities, and helping people discover what they are capable of achieving.

At Skilled Hands, we are proud to support women on these journeys and to celebrate their successes through initiatives such as our annual Red Carpet event, where participants showcase their work, share their stories, and inspire others.

Thank you, Melissa, for sharing your journey so openly, and thank you to Tina Jesson for hosting such a meaningful conversation.

What do you do when life says “No”?

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Tina Jesson on the Innovative People Podcast, where I shared the story behind Skilled Hands and the journey that led to the organisation we know today.

After graduating in Ghana with a First Class Honours degree in Industrial Art (Textiles), I expected to begin my career. Instead, I faced repeated rejection. I was often told I was “overqualified”, yet I couldn’t secure employment.

Looking back, that season of disappointment became the thread that shaped everything that followed.

Rather than giving up, I chose to create opportunities. What started as a project to promote African print fabrics through contemporary fashion evolved into meeting talented creatives, supporting women to develop artisan skills, and eventually establishing programmes that empower women through dressmaking, millinery, jewellery making, soap making, bag making, and enterprise development.

When I relocated to the UK, that vision became Skilled Hands Organisation CIC.

In this conversation with Tina, we explored not only the Skilled Hands journey but also the inspiration behind our upcoming Threads of Resilience event (Red Carpet 6).

Threads of Resilience celebrates the journeys many women take through challenge, perseverance, growth, and triumph. It is a reminder that resilience is not about avoiding difficulties; it is about continuing to move forward despite them.

Today, Skilled Hands continues to support women through skills development, confidence building, and pathways into enterprise. However, the demand for our services continues to grow, and we have women waiting to access our programmes.

We are actively seeking sponsors, partners, funders, and supporters who share our vision of empowering women through practical skills and opportunities.

A huge thank you to Tina Jesson for creating the space for this important conversation.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on resilience. What challenge in your own journey ultimately became the foundation for something greater?

What a rewarding weekend!

On Friday, I had the pleasure of attending an Architecture Department showcase at Nottingham Trent University, strengthening a partnership that began during our International Women’s Day celebrations earlier this year.

On Saturday, Skilled Hands joined the Green Hustle Festival, where around 60 people visited our stall to create unique recycled earrings and coin purses. It was inspiring to see so much creativity, sustainability, and community spirit on display as participants transformed repurposed materials into beautiful handmade items.

Events like these remind me of the power of collaboration, creativity, and community engagement in bringing people together and creating positive impact.

Thank you to everyone who connected with us over the weekend. We look forward to continuing to empower communities through creativity, skills development, and sustainable crafts.

What a fantastic day at the Green Hustle Festival! 🌿✨

The Skilled Hands team thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a vibrant and creative event. We were delighted to see so many people get involved in our recycled earring-making activity and put their own unique spin on the designs.

One of the most fascinating parts was watching participants choose different textures, colours, and weights of leather and vinyl, then seeing how those choices transformed the final piece. No two pairs were exactly the same, and each creation reflected the maker’s individual style and creativity.

It was truly inspiring to see recycled materials being given a new lease of life through imagination and craftsmanship. The creativity, experimentation, and confidence people brought to the workshop were simply amazing.

Here are just a few of the beautiful earrings created during the festival. Which one is your favourite? 💚

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, got creative, and shared the experience with us. We look forward to seeing you at future Skilled Hands workshops and events!
