New research is highlighting a serious gap in how Northern Ireland supports some of its most vulnerable residents.

Around 4 million people across the UK are subject to No Recourse to Public Funds – a policy that cuts people off from welfare and housing support when they need it most. In Northern Ireland, the problem is made worse by a lack of data, no statutory guidance, and no dedicated funding for those in crisis.

And proposed UK Government changes could push even more people into destitution.

Covid-19 exposed something those of us working in homelessness have known for a long time – you cannot separate housing from health.

Without a stable home, following public health guidance was nearly impossible for people experiencing homelessness. And when health services and homelessness services did work together during the pandemic, the response was far more effective.

Our CEO Nicola McCrudden, speaking at the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, has highlighted, these connections between health and homelessness must be built into strategy and systems permanently – not just activated in a crisis.
