South West Blood Bikes - Serving Devon

South West Blood Bikes - Serving Devon Volunteers supporting the NHS and Hospices in Devon with a free out of hours Blood Bike Service.

Official

Devon members of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes It is important to understand that South West Blood Bikes is an independent charity, formed in Plymouth in 2018. The charity is operated and managed by it's volunteers and we are not connected to any other charity within Devon or elsewhere. Our mission is clear - to save lives, and improve outcomes for patients by supporting hea

lthcare providers where rapid movement of the items we transport will achieve this. We move Whole Blood, Pathology and Microbiology samples, Donor Breast Milk, Medical Records and X-Rays, Medical Equipment and Test Kits, and medications including controlled drugs - in fact anything that is required urgently by a medical facility, providing it can fit on a motorcycle. Initially servicing Plymouth in Devon, we now have four teams around the County, with the others being based in Torbay, Exeter and Barnstaple. We work with other Blood Bike Groups where needed, to facilitate the movement of items across the country by means of arranging relays. Our charity has no paid staff, and makes no charge for our service. Every penny raised by the charity is spent directly on providing our free Blood Bike service supporting the NHS, Hospices and other medical facilities we serve. All of our volunteer riders hold advanced riding qualifications certified by either the IAM or ROSPA. We provide our services from 1700hrs to 0700hrs weekdays, and provide 24 hour cover during weekends and public holidays. 24/7 cover is provided by our Exeter and Torbay Teams to support their local hospitals and hospices. Our vehicles comprise a fleet of 14 liveried motorcycles, supported by three Skoda Scout 4 Wheel Drive cars for use in inclement weather and we currently have 83 active volunteers (as at August 2023).

It was late into the evening yesterday when our overnight coordinator Kris could say good night after all our duty volunteers got home safe & sound.

In the South, duty rider Martin had a late call out to transport urgent samples from Brixham to Torbay, with Martin arriving home just before 11:30pm.

In the North, duty driver Claire was tasked with a relay of urgent samples from Barnstaple to Bristol and met Freewheelers EVS rider Steven at J24, M5 at 10pm for the handover (pictured below). Claire got home just before midnight after a couple of diversions because of road closures.

Yesterday SWBB supporter Karen, undertook a speed triathlon in Mount Edgecombe Park, and raised a fabulous Β£315 for our charity. πŸ₯‡πŸ™β€οΈ

Conditions were lovely, warm and sunny with a nice breeze but the tidal currents made the 750m open water swim from the Barn Pool Beach in Plymouth Sound quite challenging. This was followed by a 20km cycle ride up to Whitsand Bay and a 5km run in the park, both including some very hilly roads and trails in the area. All was not helped by an accident on Karen’s final bike training session involving a sheep, a pothole and resulting in some grazes and bruises 3 days before the event. πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸš²πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ

The pictures show Karen in our new SWBB competition vest. If any of our supporters would like to undertake a sponsored event, or know of someone who would, to raise funds for our charity then we would be so happy to provide one of these vests for you to wear on the event (and keep) – subject to a minimum fundraising target. Just give us a call on 0300 365 2025 email [email protected].
