In this new article, Trisha Gudka explores why even capable lawyers second-guess themselves – and what can help.

• Lawyers can seem confident, but many doubt themselves when under pressure.
• Stress can affect how you think, making you feel less capable than you are.
• Confidence comes from slowing down, focusing on what’s real, and taking things one step at a time.

This Carers Week, we're thinking about the people in the legal sector who are trying to balance work with caring for someone they look after.

In the 2024 Mind the caring gap report, 77% of carers reported an impact on their mental health, and 70% reported an impact on their physical health.

Those figures may be two years old, but the reality behind them will still feel very familiar to many carers today.

Being a carer doesn't stop when the working day starts. It's often a constant juggling act, and it can take a real toll.

That's why supportive managers, flexible working and understanding colleagues matter so much.

How can reflective practice groups help colleagues learn, connect and support each other? Ahead of a free webinar hosted by LawCare on Thursday 2 July, Consultant Clinical Psychologist Dr Arabella Kurtz introduces the Heads & Hearts Model and explores its potential benefits for the legal sector.

As part of Life in the Law 2025 we asked people working in the legal sector:

"What is the one thing that you would ask your employer, supervisor, or manager to do to help improve your wellbeing?"

People’s answers often focused on simple, practical things that can make a real difference day to day.

One message came through loud and clear: managers matter.

Leading by example, respecting working hours, checking in with people, showing understanding and managing workloads realistically all help create healthier workplaces where people can do their best work.

We've taken what you told us and turned it into a practical resource: 10 ways to be a better manager (and colleague):

💡 Respect non-working time and time off
💡 Plan and manage work effectively
💡 Be clear and consistent
💡 Be available and check in regularly
💡 Create a culture where people feel safe to speak up
💡 Be understanding and remember people have lives outside work
💡 Recognise and appreciate people
💡 Trust your team
💡 Manage workloads realistically
💡 Support your team with difficult clients

Managers play a crucial role in shaping mental health wellbeing in the legal sector. These practical tips, inspired by Life in the Law 2025, share ways managers can better support their teams.

As Elizabeth Rimmer prepares to leave LawCare at the end of June, we're delighted to announce that Trish McLellan, LawCare’s Director of Engagement, will become Interim CEO from 1 July.

Many of you will already know Trish from volunteer meetings, training sessions and events. She has also been closely involved in much of LawCare’s work in recent years, including Life in the Law 2025, the reverse mentoring toolkit and our work with organisations across the legal sector.

Trish will lead LawCare until Mark Evans, current President of the Law Society of England and Wales, joins as CEO on 2 November.

Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who has been there.

Our peer support programme connects people in the legal sector with volunteers who have worked in law and understand what it's like to go through a difficult time.

Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, problems at work, addiction or worries about your career, talking to someone who understands can really help.

As one person told us:

“It all went well, in fact better than I had hoped. I had become very isolated which was making my anxiety and situation generally much worse. Being able to talk to another lawyer who listened empathetically and without judgement really helped me to gain perspective, be less hard on myself, rebuild my confidence and start to help myself.” 💬

Do you manage people in the legal sector? Supporting others, making difficult decisions and balancing competing demands can sometimes feel isolating, especially when there isn't always space to talk through the challenges that come with the role.

Join us on Thursday 2 July (12 to 1pm) for a free webinar introducing the Heads & Hearts model of reflective practice groups, led by clinical psychologists Dr Arabella Kurtz and Dr Anna Churcher-Clarke.

The session will look at what reflective practice groups are, what the research tells us about their impact, and how they could help lawyers with management responsibilities learn from one another and feel more supported.

The Life in the Law 2025 report found that many people managing others feel underprepared for the role and that management responsibilities are often undervalued. This session explores one practical way of changing that.

Thursday 2 July (12 to 1pm) 📅
Online via Zoom 📍
Free to attend 🎟

Led by Drs Arabella Kurtz & Anna Churcher-Clarke. Are you a lawyer with management responsibilities? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed and isolated, with no one to talk through work dilemmas?

Our new LinkedIn newsletter is out now, and in this edition Emma Roche looks at how philosophy can help lawyers understand themselves better.

She explores why knowing what drives us, how we react under pressure and what matters to us can make a real difference to how we work, lead and live.

Drawing on her experience as a lawyer and philosophical coach, Emma reflects on the person behind the lawyer and why self-awareness still matters in a profession that often rewards action over reflection.

We’re looking for new online chat volunteers to help support people across the legal sector. It’s a chance to use your experience to make a real difference to others.

Online chat gives people a completely anonymous and private way to ask for help, especially if they are in a busy office or do not feel comfortable picking up the phone. Many people tell us they would not have got in touch with LawCare in any other way.

It is particularly valued by people at the start of their legal careers, who make up around 38% of those using the service. Volunteers play a hugely important role in helping them feel listened to and supported.

** More about our online chat volunteers **

All our volunteers have all worked in law for at least two years and understand the pressures of the legal sector first-hand.

• Volunteers do one regular three-hour weekday shift each week answering online chats on their own computer or laptop. Shifts are 9am to 12pm, 11.30am to 2.30pm and 2pm to 5pm.
• You need to be in a private space where no one else will be able to see their screen. They must be at that screen for the whole shift.
• You'll need to be comfortable using IT systems and communicating via online chat, so good typing, spelling and grammar skills are helpful.

Volunteering for our online chat is ideal if you’re working on something flexible during your shift and can step away fully when a chat comes in. Online chats last around 45 minutes on average.

We’re also looking for a small number of new helpline volunteers.

Can you help? We’d love to hear from you.

Please see the LawCare website for more information about volunteering and how to apply - https://buff.ly/N44RCLz

Could you run the TCS London Marathon for LawCare in 2027? 🏃🏃🏃

If you entered the official ballot but didn't get a place, you can apply for one of LawCare's Silver Bond places.

As part of Team LawCare you'll receive:
▪ Regular updates and a dedicated point of contact at LawCare
▪ A running shirt (personalised, if you fancy that)
▪ Help and support from the comms team in sharing your story
▪ Cheers along the route and finish line meet and greet
▪ A pre-marathon get-together (with runners from Legal Runner who may be running for other charities also invited)

In return, we ask runners to commit to raising a minimum of £2,000 to support LawCare's work across the legal community.

Applications close on 14 August 2026 and are open to people who entered the main ballot but were unsuccessful.

We would particularly like to offer places to people who have not run the London Marathon before, who have a connection to LawCare and the LegalRunner community, and who want to share why supporting mental health matters to them. We will also take into account any previous fundraising experience and how you plan to reach the £2,000 sponsorship target.
