RNLI Newhaven is a modern afloat station and operates a Severn class All-weather Lifeboat (ALB), the ‘David and Elizabeth Acland’. Our field of operations encompasses high speed cross-channel ferries, merchant ships, fishing vessels, charter fishing boats, yachts and power boats, not to mention the sailing dinghies, wind surfers, kite surfers, stand-up paddle boards, swimmers and jet skis that launch from the beaches and marinas. These all contribute to provide a wide variety of service calls for our volunteer crew. If you get in to trouble in the water, or see anyone else in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. ⚠️The RNLI is urging the public to stay safe at the coast during Storm Austen 🌊🌊

Storm Austen is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of England from late Thursday into Friday. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning with winds forecast along the south coast to reach more than 70mph. The expected strong winds will also bring heavy rain posing a safety risk to those visiting the coast.

We advise people to exercise extreme caution if visiting the shoreline, especially along exposed cliffs, seafronts and piers. And remember:

❗If you find yourself in trouble in the water, the RNLI’s safety advice is Float to Live:

* Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
* Relax and try to breathe normally
* Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
* It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
* Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

❗If you see someone else in trouble at the coast, remember Phone, Float Throw:

* Phone 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard to get help.
* Tell the struggling person to Float to Live.
* Throw them something that floats, such as a life ring.

'No deed is greater than saving a life'

In May 2026, Zeyang, an international student from China studying in London, was saved by the volunteer crew at Newhaven RNLI, when he and a companion were cut off by the tide near the cliffs at Seven Sisters. Last month, he came back to the station to pay tribute to the crew with a special gift. 🥰🌊🛟

Zeyang, who loved this stretch of Sussex coastline so much he’d visited it eight times during his studies, had gone for a walk with a friend after seeing a post on Chinese social media recommending a walk under the cliffs. Unfortunately, the post made no reference to or warning of the risk of tidal cut off.

The pair had been walking for well under an hour, when the tide suddenly came up and cut off their safe route back. They had no mobile phone reception but used the flash on their camera to make SOS signals out to sea. Luckily, a boat saw their distress call and raised the alarm with HM Coastguard, who tasked Newhaven RNLI to save them.

In September, Zeyang returned to Newhaven’s lifeboat station to thank the crew members - Dan, Kath, Steve and Rich - for saving his life.

‘It’s a Chinese tradition to gift a 'Jin Qi' (pennant / flag) to someone who has saved your life, such as a doctor,’ he says. ‘It’s less common in the digital age, but I thought it would be a nice way of showing my gratitude to the volunteer crew at Newhaven.’

The Jin Qi now hangs proudly at the lifeboat station. Zeyang had the ornate red flag specially made in China, and the embroidered font reads, in English and Chinese characters:

‘To Newhaven Lifeboats… No deed is greater than saving a life’. ❤️💙

⚠️ Don't forget, there is currently a high risk of tidal cut off in the Birling Gap and Seven Sisters area this week, until Thursday 15 October. Newhaven RNLI publish tidal information throughout the year for anyone and everyone who may need reminding, or may not be aware, of the changing tidal ranges along our coastline.

🚨Two shouts in one day for Newhaven RNLI🚨

In the early hours of Tuesday 6 October our volunteer ILB crew were paged to assist local Coastguard Rescue teams to the east, then in the early evening our ALB crew were paged to assist a person and a dog cut off by the tide near Peacehaven. 🌊🛟

This was the first ALB shout for crew member Charly, and both shouts were the first to be handled by our new Launch Authority Richard, who took it all in his stride. 💫🏅

A busy day, but a reminder that our crew are always ready to answer the call when the pager sounds, no matter what time of day or how often.

⚠️High risk of tidal cut off between Wednesday 7 October through to Thursday 15 October ⚠️

❗If you're planning to walk, paddle, paraglide or get out on the water along our coastline, be aware that high tides will increase the shoreline risk of getting cut off by the rising tide for the following period:

Cut off risk 07/10/26-09/10/26 (Wednesday-Friday)
Greater cut off risk 10/10/26-15/10/26 (Saturday-Thursday)

Finally, don't forget our advice:

- Always check forecast and tides before you set out ✅
- Let someone know your plans ✅
- Carry a means of communication ✅
- If you find yourself in the water, remember Float To Live ✅
- If you see someone in difficulty in the water, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard ✅

Seaford Mermaids make a splash for Newhaven RNLI! 🧜🏾‍♀️🧜🧜‍♂️

Last Saturday, Seaford Mermaids Big Swim saw lots of people join the swimming group under beautiful skies at Seaford Beach, followed by hot drinks and cake. Founded by Ruth Rose, the Mermaids have been doing an annual social swim in aid of Newhaven RNLI since 2020, raising over £42,000 . This year's swim has so far added more than £5000 to that total, via the Mermaids' JustGiving page and our fundraising team collecting on the beach! 🤩

Emmeline, one of the Mermaids’ organisers and a volunteer at Newhaven RNLI, said: ‘Empowering our members to swim safely throughout the year is at the heart of the Mermaids’ ethos. We promote the joy of swimming as a group and raise awareness of the potential hazards in the sea, helping to educate our members through sharing knowledge of the tides, weather and sea conditions.'

'It was great to see so many members come down to the beach last Saturday to enjoy a swim and raise vital funds for the RNLI.'

Thank you to Seaford Mermaids for supporting our lifesaving work! 🌊🛟
