🍏 We won an International Green Apple Environment Award! 🍏

We are beyond proud to announce that our project, Havens Food Cooperative, has been named a winner at the prestigious International Green Apple Awards, chosen from over 700 global entries in Food Waste Prevention.

Our team is heading to the House of Lords this November to collect the trophy and find out whether we take home Bronze, Silver, Gold, or the top title of Green Champion. On top of that, we have been invited to become Green World Ambassadors to represent the UK at the 2027 Green World Awards!

Since opening our doors in 2020, our mission has been simple: stop good food from rotting in landfills and get fresh meals onto local plates.

What we've achieved together:

🍞 £2M+ worth of quality, edible food saved from waste

🚛 680+ tonnes of food diverted from landfill

📉 Up to 3.5 tonnes rescued every single week—preventing roughly 7 tonnes of CO₂e emissions

🤝 Direct, barrier-free support for hundreds of local households and 17 partner community groups across the Lewes District

🌱 A zero-waste cycle, turning any inedible food into rich compost for community allotments

Operating 365 days a year from Denton, this simply wouldn't happen without our incredible team of 45+ volunteers, our dedicated manager, and our 21 supermarket partners who help us fight waste daily.

Marathon training is picking up steam

Mayor Mark Wardle and his consort Mon looking fresh before running 16 miles yesterday in preparation for a full marathon in support of Havens Community Hub & Rainy Day Foundation

Every training run brings them one step closer (of the 45-50 thousand steps they’ll need to take on 13th September!) to raising vital funds for these two fantastic local charities.

We had an incredible afternoon on Monday welcoming community representatives into our new Support Centre space, pre-renovation. Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared ideas, enjoyed coffee and cake, and helped shape the future of homelessness and housing security support in the area.

Your feedback on the renovation plans, partnership opportunities, and community priorities is already helping us refine the next stage of development. We’re excited to keep you updated as the project moves forward and we’ll be sharing more photos and information about the project very soon.

Monday's event showed just how much passion and care Newhaven has for supporting people who need it most.

Newhaven's Mayor, Councillor Mark Wardle, is preparing to run a full marathon (26.2 miles) as part of a year-long fundraising campaign supporting two fantastic local charities:
Homeless in the Havens (Havens Community Hub)
& Rainy Day Foundation
Throughout his Mayoral year, Mark will be taking part in various events, community activities and personal challenges to raise money for people facing homelessness, adversity and mental health issues.
Mark said:
"I wanted my year in office to make a real difference to the people who call our town home. Every mile I run and every fundraising event we hold is aimed at supporting two incredible charities that help local people facing hardship."

Would a Familiarisation Visit Help You Feel More Comfortable?

As we prepare to open our new practice building, we understand that changes in environment can sometimes be challenging.

We are offering guided visits before opening day for patients who may appreciate extra time to become familiar with the new setting. Visitors will be able to view the reception area, waiting rooms, GP consulting rooms, and nurse treatment rooms.

These visits are intended to help patients feel at ease and know what to expect before attending future appointments.

🏡 It was a pleasure to visit Havens Community Hub and see the incredible work Paula and the team are doing to support people experiencing homelessness across Peacehaven, Saltdean, Telscombe and the wider Havens area.

I'm proud that this Government has made ending rough sleeping a national priority. But if we're going to achieve that mission, we need to invest in organisations like this that are already making a real difference on the ground.
