What is Havens Food Cooperative?
Havens Food Cooperative is an environmental initiative dedicated to fighting food waste and feeding the community.
Founded in 2020 by Havens Community Hub CIC, our project is run by 45 volunteers who collect food from 21 stores and is supported by one full-time project manager. We rescue and redistribute up to 3.5 tonnes of short-shelf-life, ‘wonky’, or overstocked perishable foods per week, preventing around 9 tonnes of CO2e (greenhouse gases) from being generated via landfill/incineration.
From our central office on Thompson Road in Denton, our project operates a community pantry year-round, supplying 17 community groups and organisations (Pop-up Pantries), including food banks, social clubs, youth groups, community cafes, and more.
The food comes from a range of partners, including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Lidl, Co-op, Waitrose, Asda, M&S and Co-op, and is prioritised to feed hundreds of households in the Lewes District every week.
From collecting from a single store to becoming a multi-award-winning treasure today, Havens Food Cooperative has officially hit a monumental milestone: crossing the £2 million mark in rescued food at the start of 2026. By turning potential landfill waste into vital resources 365
days a year, our volunteer-driven initiative continues to prove that fighting climate change and supporting the Lewes District community go hand in hand. Every tonne of 'wonky' veg and surplus food saved isn't just a win for the planet-it's a lifeline delivered straight to the
households that need it most.
