💪🐛🦋Last week our amazing volunteers were out at Staunton Meend Common to continue the restoration of the precious heathland habitat💪🐛🦋.
Staunton Meend was traditionally a heathland, an open space, made up of low-growing plants, like heather, gorse, broom and grasses and home to some incredible wildlife.
The restoration is being managed by Staunton Parish Council, Ecologist Helena Ronicle, with the help of our volunteers and local residents to clear birch scrub to return the area to heathland which will enabled the invertebrate population to rise, and hopefully even bring adders back to the area! 🐍🐛🐍

Biofluorescence is a unique phenomenon where certain organisms emit light in different colours than the ones they absorb. Today is National Apple Day!

Our October volunteer outing was a glorious sunny day spent picking apples at Broome Farm in Peterstow, where the Johnson Family have been growing apples and pressing c***r since the 1930s.

Many hands made light work of collecting windfalls and we were rewarded with a tour of the orchards, finding out about the different varieties of apples grown at Broome Farm (over 150), with some of them not grown anywhere else in the world! We watched the apples we had gathered being pressed, and yes, after all that hard work, of course we got to taste a c***r or too!

Thanks to all our volunteers for your hard work - and to Broome Farm for hosting us.

If you would like to visit Broome Farm there is a lovely walk you can take around the historic apple and pear orchards, from Spring to Autumn time. Info here: https://ow.ly/tC6m50ZZFqi

🌿 Volunteers Needed to help with the Restoration of Staunton Meend Common 🌿

This Thursday 22nd October join our dedicated group of volunteers at Stauton Meend Common. Small commons like Staunton Meend are one of the Special Qualities of the Wye Valley National Landscape. The Common is rich in wildlife and home to rare and declining habitats including lowland acid grassland and marsh. It is estimated that less than 30,000 hectares of lowland acid grassland now remain in UK.

We have been involved and supportive of the restoration work on this common for many years, including drystone walling around the boundary by our volunteers.

On this visit we'll be removing invasive brash, to help restore this valuable habitat!

Date: 22nd October
Time: 9.45am for a 10am start
Location: Stanton Meend Common, Staunton, Coleford
Meet: W3W:///rational.downfield.broth, Grid Ref: SO 54675 12253

Off-Road Wheelchair Ramble Whitestone - limited car parking 24th October

We are holding an off-road wheelchair ramble on Saturday 24th October, starting at Whitestone forest carpark. Parking spaces in the top carpark will be reserved for wheelchair users taking part in the ramble until around 4pm.

Alternative car parking for able-bodied visitors will be opened up across the road from the lower Whitestone carparking area. We would appreciate your help in parking there, if need be, so that everyone can enjoy Whitestone.

We will be rambling for about 8 miles, passing Cleddon Falls and around Beacon Hill and the Duchess's Ride. ! Off-road wheelers are coming from far and wide to explore the wonderful countryside of the Wye Valley National Landscape, so if you see us out and about give us a wave and say 'Hello'.

You can find out more about the access work we have been doing - see link in comments.

Thanks to Natural Resources Wales for supporting this event.

Chepstow Walking Festival kicks off a week today, with 21 fantastic walks on offer.

If you fancy a geological walk, there are just a few tickets left for our 'Beneath our Boots' walk on Sunday 25th October, when geologist Steve Bennett and Ruth Waycott, from the Wye Valley National Landscape Team, will be rambling through the geology of the lower Wye Valley. We will be finding out what really is beneath your walking boots in the Tintern area, before heading up to Offa's D**e and the limestone rocks making up the Devil's Pulpit, with its fantastic view down to the sandstone ruins of Tintern Abbey.

Like to walk with your dog? Walk 9 on Saturday 24th October is dog friendly combining views, historical sites and folklore. Starting at the Kymin you will visit three remarkable ancient stones - The Suck Stone, The Hearkening Rock and The Buckstone, as well as a Trig Point!

The festival is put together by the amazing team from Chepstow Walkers are Welcome. Find details of all the walks and book here: https://ow.ly/nPh450ZY0Is
