September is World Alzheimer’s Month, so we wanted to share some information and resources about dementia.

At MacIntyre, we have extensive experience of supporting people with a learning disability who are living with, or may be developing, dementia. We know that dementia can disproportionately affect people with learning disabilities, so we wanted to share some of the information and resources that may be helpful.

❤️ This one is a little personal… and the reason behind organising the charity night.

I’m sharing this clip of me and my son at his college, MacIntyre, a specialist education college provision supporting those with additional needs.

Over the years, our family has faced many challenges around autism, but we’ve always found a way through them together. There have been difficult moments, but also so many moments of happiness, growth and pride. ❤️

MacIntyre has become an important part of my son’s journey now, which is why I’m so proud to be holding my Strictly Come Bollywood Bhangra Charity Night to raise money for the college, helping towards outdoor play equipment.

And what better way to raise money than by bringing everyone together for an incredible night! 🎶🔥

What happens when a Hertfordshire heavy metal fan gets to compose his own song as part of a neighbourhood arts collaboration?

Robbie tells us what it was like to get involved with the Soulwood project and how he wrote his song:

"I thought of all the lyrics and then they helped me with the tune. We sat down and worked together to come up with a tune that went my lyrics.

I did the sentence starter activity and I liked it very much, it was good. It helped me to think of where to begin each time and then I just filled it in with some answers of mine.

I would use these again if I wrote another song as it would help, because I’m not very confident at writing music myself and thinking where to start.

I’ve never had the chance to write my own song completely before. I have only ever written as a part of a group. I liked writing a song on my own, for myself.

I think it was the first time for all of us to have done this. I think I would have the confidence to do this again now.

A lot of people had music played and some people chose to read it like a poem. Everyone took it in different directions from the sentence starters."

William is helping open doors for others.

Not long ago, William was a learner at MacIntyre’s No Limits service in High Wycombe, working towards his own ambitions for employment.

Now he’s come back to share his experience with local employers and help other people with learning disabilities find opportunities of their own.

William recently helped lead an employment workshop in High Wycombe, where employers explored how they can create meaningful work opportunities for people with learning disabilities. Several businesses already working with MacIntyre also came along to share their experiences and show what can happen when employers and support organisations work together.

The event has already led to eight employers expressing an interest in joining a new Community Employment Project next year, with more conversations under way.

William is continuing to develop his own independence at Hills Community Café in Micklefield – but he’s also using what he’s learned to help other people take their next steps.

What do you do when the local community café space stops serving? Start your own, obviously!

That’s exactly what’s happening at Beanhill Learning Centre in Milton Keynes, where a central room is being transformed into Café Bean, a welcoming space for local people.

The project has already brought people together. Johnny and Simon, who attend the learning centre, have been working with colleagues Debbie and Andrea to make it all happen, while the manager of MacIntyre’s Coffee Shop and catering business in nearby Great Holm has been sharing her expertise.

A small grant from Woughton Community Council is helping fund the essentials, including a new fridge freezer and coffee machine. Meanwhile, the team is working through food hygiene and regulations, developing the menu and creating a store cupboard from a tiny office.

They're also working hard to clear ground in the garden to install a pergola for outdoor seating.

For now, they’re welcoming local groups of people who draw on MacIntyre’s support for an informal cake and cuppa while work continues. But the aim is to open Café Bean to the wider community soon, initially on Thursdays.

It’s brilliant to see a new idea taking shape through teamwork, shared knowledge and a desire to create something useful for the local community.
