Matlock Camera Club

Matlock Camera Club Please see https://www.matlockcameraclub.org.uk/about to see how we approach things.

If you are interested in learning about photography in a friendly and supportive club, then you have come to the right place :-)
No stuffy traditional competitions here! Matlock Camera Club was founded in 1978 to "promote and encourage all aspects of photography", and we still do so today. We have evolved over time, and last year we threw away the traditional ‘camera club rulebook’ to focus more o

n the social aspects of club membership, sharing our love of photography with each other, nurturing and learning from each other, and our invited speakers/experts. We now run a rolling programme of:

A talk/lecture/presentation by an invited speaker, each an expert in their field. These talks will nearly all be held at the Imperial Rooms in Matlock, so if you’re interested in seeing what the club is about, please feel free to come along to any of the meetings (see the programme for details of dates). A practical session on the subject, with (if possible), the above original speaker returning to help, advise and give tips and hints. Club members then submit images relating to the current subject, and the original speaker (if possible) will return for an evening of constructive advice, critique and discussion about each image. This replaces the traditional camera club competitions, in which images are displayed anonymously to be judged and scored. Our alternative way enables dialogue between the expert and the photographers, so everyone can learn more, in a non-judgemental environment. We welcome everyone, whether you are seasoned photographer, a beginner, just interested in learning, or even just to come along and see/learn about some great images in a social setting (there is no obligation to be a photographer at all!)

For more information, please feel free to contact the club via our contact us page, or just turn up to one of our sessions. Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings from early September until the end of May, with practical sessions generally held on Saturday mornings (depending on the subject, these might also be held on a Wednesday night). A chance to get up close and personal with "The Duke" steam locomotive, and access the yard and workshop. We are expecting some fantastic images at the Black & White critique session later this month!

A great evening tonight - our first event of 2026 - On The Street - Philip Smith
Philip was a great speaker, with some brilliant images, hints tips and advice on how to navigate the difficult world of street photography.
He also brought a selection of fine prints for use to peruse at the break, a fabulous and interesting evening all round!
