Our Impact Report is Now Live

Our first Derbyshire Rural Domestic Abuse in the Workplace Conference brought together survivors, employers, charities and specialist organisations for a powerful day of learning, reflection and collaboration.

From heartfelt and often heartbreaking lived-experience stories to expert insights on recognising and supporting employees affected by domestic abuse, the event highlighted both the challenges facing rural communities and the difference workplaces can make.

The conference generated strong engagement, valuable networking opportunities and overwhelmingly positive feedback, while also helping us identify key lessons to build on for future events.

🔥 More than 400 Derbyshire households are now part of RAD's Community Oil Buying Scheme!

Since relaunching earlier this year, membership has grown to 438 households, helping rural residents work together to secure better heating oil prices and tackle rising fuel costs.

As the weather starts to turn and thoughts inevitably turn to putting the heating back on, many of you will also be wondering when to fill up the oil tank.

Unfortunately, there’s rather a lot going on in the world that is affecting the price of oil at the moment. The continuing conflict involving Iran, disruption to important oil routes and infrastructure in the Middle East, including the recent attack on Saudi oil facilities, and increased tensions around Red Sea shipping are all putting pressure on global oil markets.

We did see something of a dip in heating oil prices over the summer, although prices never returned to their pre-conflict levels, and they are beginning to climb again. Add to that the usual increase in demand as colder weather arrives and it makes predicting what will happen next particularly difficult. We certainly don’t have a crystal ball, so we’re not going to tell anyone when they should buy – ultimately, timing an oil purchase remains something of a gamble.

What we can do is keep members informed about what is driving prices and continue raising with local and national government the challenges faced by households that rely on heating oil. In the meantime, RAD’s buying scheme will continue doing what it can to help members secure a competitive price whenever they decide the time is right to order.

What an incredible day at the Derbyshire Rural Domestic Abuse in the Workplace Conference.

We were delighted to see such a fantastic turnout, with employers, HR professionals, managers and partners from across Derbyshire coming together to learn, share experiences and strengthen their understanding of rural domestic abuse and its impact in the workplace.

The day was filled with honest, heartfelt and at times heartbreaking accounts from survivors of domestic abuse. Their courage in sharing personal experiences reminded us all why these conversations matter and the vital role that workplaces can play in supporting those affected.

A huge thank you to our speakers, including Emily Brailsford, Judith Vickeress, Rhianon Bragg, Dr Fatima Eltinay, representatives from EIDA (Employers' Initiative on Domestic Abuse), Leanne Parkinson from Crossroads Derbyshire, Jane MacIntyre from The Wish Centre, and The Elm Foundation. Their expertise, insight and passion highlighted not only the realities of domestic abuse, particularly within rural communities, but also the practical steps employers can take to recognise the signs and support employees who may be suffering in silence.

We also heard from organisations dedicated to helping people escape domestic abuse, rebuild their lives and access the support they need, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between employers, charities, support services and statutory agencies.

Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed and helped make the event such a success. Together, we are helping to create workplaces that are safer, more informed and better equipped to support those affected by domestic abuse.

Founder and Managing Director of RiTA (Rural Initiatives Tackling Abuse), the UK's first national organisation dedicated to tackling abuse and violence against women and girls in rural communities.

🎤 Rhianon Bragg
Domestic abuse survivor and national advocate, working with policing, justice and government agencies to improve responses and drive policy change.
