Portland College is a vibrant national college for people with a wide range of disabilities.

We strive to develop every learner’s unimagined potential with a personalised programme that can include work experience and volunteering. The personal curriculum is underpinned by a broad range of accredited qualifications in independence, literacy, numeracy, sport, arts, business studies, computing, small animal care and horticulture. We deliver a specialised sensory curriculum for learners with more complex needs.

Portland Assessments are working with Wired Differently to give one lucky winner a Pre-diagnostic Neurodiversity Screening worth £350.

Our Neurodiversity screening is a first step to explore whether you show autistic or ADHD traits, helping you access some support and decide whether a full diagnostic assessment would be beneficial.

🎉 A proud moment for Portland Charity!

We are delighted to share that our Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mark Dale, has officially received his MBE at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle earlier this week.

Presented with his medal by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, on 27 October, the honour recognises Mark's services to Further Education and nearly 40 years of commitment to creating accessible education and opportunities for young people and adults with disabilities.

Since joining Portland in 2006, Mark has led an incredible transformation, helping to develop the organisation into the nationally recognised charity and Ofsted Outstanding College it is today, changing hundreds of lives each year.

Mark described feeling privileged to receive the honour on behalf of Portland, recognising the contribution of our staff, volunteers, learners, residents, families and carers in making the world a more inclusive place.

We are incredibly proud to see Mark's dedication and achievements recognised in this way. A thoroughly deserved honour!

Our first family SEND disco last Friday was a big hit with local families and with our lovely day service citizens. We were amazed by the effort that went in to some of the fancy dress costumes that visitors wore!

Participants enjoyed a boogie to all the Halloween disco classics and joined in with games such as musical statues, zombie footsteps and a limbo!

One family said that they were really impressed with the venue and how the event was hosted. Visitors were thrilled to all receive a fidget toy prize that were kindly donated by Carrie Austin from Wired Differently - thank you Carrie!

We hope to host similar events again in the future as there is definitely an appetite for more family orientated inclusive activities in the local community.

Pollyteach is an independent specialist school for children aged 8 to 16 who find mainstream difficult. Come along to their open day and see how they do things differently.

This open day is for parents who are thinking ahead. If your child is finding school hard now, or you’re worried about the move to secondary, it’s a good time to look at your options, understand the EHCP process and see what a different kind of school could offer before things get harder.

🌱 A huge thank you to ENSEK! 🎨

We were delighted to welcome the team from ENSEK back to Portland for another day of corporate volunteering a few weeks ago. This time at our Woodborough Campus, Nottingham, helping us get the site ready for new learners who started in September!

The team got stuck into a range of jobs, including painting learner rooms ready for the new academic year and giving the garden some much-needed attention. They cleared away the weeds and created raised beds where learners can get involved in gardening activities and develop their practical skills.

Mark Morton, Assistant Principal Nottingham, said: “Thank you so much to the team at ENSEK for the work they have completed. Getting the learner rooms painted ready for the upcoming academic year has really helped.”

We’re incredibly grateful to the ENSEK team for giving up their time and making such a positive difference to our campus. Their hard work has helped us create welcoming spaces and new opportunities for our learners to enjoy. Thank you, ENSEK! ❤️

🔫 Laser Tag Fun at Walesby Forest! 🌳

On 7th October, a group of learners, citizens and community members headed to Walesby Forest for an action-packed game of laser tag – and what a brilliant time they had!

There was plenty of running, hiding and laughter, with everyone enjoying the challenge of trying to outsmart one another. Catching the staff and volunteers out with their lasers proved particularly popular!

The game was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to put their teamwork and communication skills into practice, make memories and enjoy an exciting activity together.

💬 Lucy, one of our learners, summed up the experience perfectly: “It was fun and I enjoyed the experience.”

There was so much interest in this trip that we’re already looking forward to organising another one next year!
