Portland's Forest Road West learners recently represented the college at an inter-college E-Sports tournament hosted by SENSE College in Loughborough. 🎮

The event gave learners the opportunity to showcase their gaming skills while building confidence, teamwork, communication, and resilience. Competing in games such as Minecraft and Rocket League, they connected with learners from other colleges, made new friendships, and embraced new challenges in a supportive environment.

The tournament was a great success and has strengthened the partnership between Portland and SENSE College, with future online tournaments and collaborative opportunities already in the works.

Today on the last day of Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a spotlight on Karen, one of our longest standing volunteers.

For the past 14 years, Karen has dedicated her time to supporting Portland Charity, particularly within fundraising and helping to run tombolas at events. After retiring from retail management 13 years ago, she has continued to give back to the community and has helped raise a significant amount of money for the charity over the years.

Karen’s passion for volunteering has also inspired those around her, with her close friend, Lyn, now volunteering alongside her in fundraising, while her husband supports Portland by helping at events and with occasional minibus driving.

Outside of volunteering, Karen loves spending time with family and friends, especially seeing her granddaughter, and enjoys gardening.

When asked what Portland means to her, she said:
“Portland is my safe space. I love everything Portland stands for and provides for people. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, it’s like a warm hug. I’d recommend volunteering here to people of all ages.”

Thank you, Karen, for your incredible dedication and support over the years. We are so grateful for everything you do.

It's Volunteers’ Week, and today we’re celebrating the incredible corporate groups who give their time to support our community.

From small local businesses to national organisations, our corporate volunteers play a huge role in helping us create meaningful experiences and opportunities across Portland Charity.
Every volunteering day, donation and partnership helps us continue providing incredible opportunities across our departments, while also saving funds that can be redirected into our fundraising appeals and community support.

Whether it’s supporting activities, helping in education, assisting on the farm, maintaining our grounds, creating tombolas for events, supporting mock interviews or getting involved with fundraising, every team makes a lasting impact.
By partnering with Portland Charity, businesses are also helping raise awareness of the work we do within our community, and there are so many ways to get involved and make a real difference.

Here are some of the many businesses we have been working with: Laing O’Rourke, DHL, ENSEK, Severn Trent, National Grid, Alstom, Amazon, Hexagon, HSBC, VF Nottingham, Mansfield Building Society, National Trust, Clumber Park, Cadent and more.

If your business would be interested in supporting Portland Charity through volunteering, fundraising or partnership opportunities, we’d love to hear from you.

Before half term, a group of learners, residents and community members enjoyed a visit to King George V Park to play a round of disc golf. All participants had a great time attempting to throw their frisbees into the various targets and showed a lot of perseverance!

Despite a few lost frisbees in the trees, everyone finished the course and then had fun using the playground and outdoor gym. The staff at the park were very accommodating and more visits will be planned in the future as part of the Newstart enrichment programme.
