🎤 This month we will be bringing local history to life with a talk about “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗻” by ex-miner and deputy, 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻, who will be telling us about his working life and the lives of the people he worked with, ending at Thoresby Colliery. 🎤

Two Left Feet?…..WE NEED MORE MEN…

If you are happy to lead or are happy to learn to lead our lovely ladies to lilting Latin rhythms come and join us for 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱

We meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at Ravenshead Village Hall from 11.30am to 1pm.

If you're looking for fun, laughter or would just like to make new friends join Ravenshead u3a for salsa (and a lot more activities.) And don't worry if you have two left feet! You would be more than welcome!

Our group of dancers have fun learning the dance steps, and our Group Leaders Katy & Eric Roberts make sure that all are catered for, with learning basic moves for beginners, to more complicated routines for those more adept and experienced.

The common theme is Fun, Friendliness and Enjoyment, and that is evident from the laughter and giggles throughout the sessions after periods of full concentration and then a few odd steps!

One of our thriving newer Interest Groups is “Arts Appreciation”- and at their May Meeting the topic was an “𝑰𝙣𝒕𝙧𝒐𝙙𝒖𝙘𝒕𝙞𝒐𝙣 𝙩𝒐 𝑨𝙧𝒕 𝑫𝙚𝒄𝙤 𝙖𝒏𝙙 𝙢𝒐𝙧𝒆”, which included information about Art Deco style, its connection with Burgh Island, and painter Tamara de Lempicka.

Art Deco is a sleek, glamorous design style that took the world by storm in the 1920s and 1930s. It influenced everything from architecture (like the Empire State Building) and interior design to fashion, cars, and everyday household objects.

It was all about looking forward to the future, celebrating modern machine age technology, and basking in post-WWI luxury.

Art deco figurines were particularly popular at the time and this excellent short video explains the different types and styles.
Burgh Island.

Member Janet shared the fascinating history of the Art Deco Burgh Island, a popular location for 1920’s and 1930’s celebrities, such as Agatha Christie, in South Devon. Members were keen to take a trip on the sea tractor!

Tamara de Lempicka
A very popular painter of the era was Tamara de Lempicka. Lempicka was a Polish painter who spent her working life in France and the United States. She is best known for her polished Art Deco portraits of aristocrats and the wealthy, and for her highly stylized paintings of nudes.

Maths for Fun!

Really? Can Maths ever be fun?

Yes, maths can absolutely be fun for older people, but the way it was traditionally taught in schools in their younger years often hid the best parts.

Real mathematics is about patterns, hidden connections, creative problem-solving, and logic games.

The "Aha!" Moment
Maths acts like a series of puzzle games. There is a unique rush of dopamine when you struggle with a complex problem, look at it from a completely new angle, and the solution suddenly clicks.

Our Ru3a “Maths for Fun” Group meet on the 2nd Monday of the month from 9:00am-10:30am in the Brammer Room at Ravenshead Village Hall.

Last Friday, 8 members of the Ravenshead u3a Food and Cookery Interest Group headed out for lunch at The Old Lodge at Maythorne, near Southwell, a restaurant with its own fishing lake.

Whilst the majority of the group’s meetings involve each member devising and cooking a dish to a particular theme, to bring to share at a home “fuddle”, they do occasionally eat out together.

Some ordered a traditional Chicken Kiev, another Grilled Halloumi Salad, others Mussels & Fries, and two intrepid members chose to share a Dover Sole, including demonstrating how to debone and fillet their fish at the table!

Yummy desserts followed, with Rhubarb Tart with lemon sorbet, and Chocolate Bomb with blackcurrant sauce and popping candy proving to be favourites.

The Ravenshead u3a Cinema & Theatre Group has now been re-launched under new leadership, with new Group Leader Jayne Piper assisted by Jane Rose now creating an exciting list of visits to local cinemas/theatres/other entertainment venues primarily, but not exclusively, in the Nottingham/Mansfield area.

A social event will be held approximately twice yearly to put forward ideas, arrange travel, discuss previous outings, and appoint volunteers to arrange future outings etc.

Visits out will be organised as and when suitable performances are identified, but they’re aiming for every 4-6 weeks.

Joint travel arrangements will be by Car, Bus, Tram or Village Bus to venues such as :-

• Theatre Roya/Nottingham Playhouse
• Albert Hall Nottingham
• Lace Market Theatre, Nottingham
• Mansfield Palace Theatre
• Outdoor theatre/cinema at Newstead Abbey, Wollaton Hall, Nottingham Castle
• Southwell Minster
• Local amateur dramatic companies – Ravenshead Theatre Group, Robin Hood Theatre Averham for example and other amateur
dramatic companies
• Bonington Theatre, Arnold for productions & film showings
• Broadway Cinema Nottingham
• Arc Cinema Hucknall
• Odeon Cinema Mansfield, in particular Odeon Silvers

One of the most vibrant and newer interest groups we have is the Fashion Group, and this May they discussed “Fashion in the The 1960s”

Known as the decade of counterculture, in May 2026 the Fashion group considered what might have had an influence on 1960s fashion..

The rag trade and the music business brought glory to the streets of London. Places to be seen were Carnaby Street and The Kings Road. Male and female fashion was ablaze with style and colour.
