The Friends Group actively contributes to the management and upkeep of our local park, as well as arranging activities. Anyone can join.

Beech Road Park was once known as Chorlton Recreational Ground and is still known by some locals as 'The Rec'. The park was originally sited south of Beech Road until 1896, when Lord Egerton gave the present site to the Council in 1904 when selling the original recreational ground for the development of housing. It was on Valentine's Day in 1968 that the park acquired its first beech trees. 50 were planted by the then Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress together with local school children.

Some of us don't do QR codes. It tends to be younger people and older people who don't. This is due to a range of reasons - limited data - limited access to tech, capabilities but folk still want to share what they think. Here is a link to the web site to do the consultation.
Paper copies are available from the Ranger and Unity Arts Manchester will be in the park on Thursday afternoon with paper copies and a general 'Have Your Say' graffiti board for those who find doing the full consultation challenging...

Warning am Sunday 25.10.26 - broken bough hanging over pathway. The high winds have broken six large branches of a mature Maple tree mid-way along the Wilton Road side of the park, only five have fallen to ground. The sixth is dangling between other branches, approx. 25 - 30 feet above the tarmac path.
Friends & park users used events fencing/cones to block off the danger area as best we could. We’ve alerted the Council. However, it’s tree team will have multiple jobs like this today & high winds are continuing for hours yet. So please avoid the area around this tree until the tree team have made it safe.

During the half term holiday, we will be in the park with Unity Arts Manchester on Tuesday 27th and Thursday 29th October 2026 1pm - 4pm. Come along and 'Have Your Say'. We will have paper copies of the consultation and we will assist children and young people to be involved.

The local parakeets have been flocking in their dozens to Beech Road Park to feast on, (what else?), Beech nuts.

The Friends of Beech Road Park recently contacted Councillor Mathew Benham as roads and pavements around the park were flooding when it rains. Many of the “gullies”, (holes with metal grids at the roadsides that let rainwater drain away), are partially or completely blocked with leaves and other litter. The Council is due to clear the gullies on Wednesday 07.10.26. The machine used will need access to the gullies, so if we leave several feet of space between parked cars around each gully they can all be cleared and we won’t have to wade through puddles all Autumn.

Now that the weather seems to be about to do it’s normal job of providing the water the park needs, we’d like to thank all the Friends volunteers who turned out during the multiple heatwaves to water the most thirsty plants, keeping them not just alive but thriving. The photographs are from a session on the 12th, (just after the solar eclipse), when some children enthusiastically joined in.
