Last weekend 9 cadets from the squadron and 2 staff members attended Exercise Watercress 4. The cadets spent the weekend learning fieldcraft and first aid skills in the field. Flying into the exercise from RAF Odiham in a Chinook the cadets got to experience a rare flying opportunity. The weekend proceeded with the cadets learning how to cook and eat rations, navigate and patrol followed by how not to be seen. The course was very demanding with early starts and some late nights for staff with duties. All cadets came away at the end of the weekend with a blue fieldcraft qualification and some new exciting experiences. South West Region RAFAC HantsIOWWingRAFAC RAF Odiham Official Comdt AC

Last Friday some of our cadets were lucky to be selected to attend AEF (Air Experience Flight) Flying at RAF St.Athan. This is a fundamental offering of the air cadet experience. Flying gives our cadets a unique opportunity to learn and experience the theory taught in the classroom and see it applied in practise. Flying is one of the unique opportunities available to our cadets which they remember long after they age out. Comdt AC

We have been busy out in the community volunteering alongside the Lydney ACF. During the Forest Wild Boar Chase (mountain bike race) between us we ran a waterpoint and checkpoint location on the route. The day went well and in true cadet spirit banter and fun was had by all.

Following on from Armed Forces Day the squadron was involved in Woolaston Carnival and the Wing Activities Day. At Woolaston Carnival the squadron advertised and promoted themselves to families in the community. Showcasing the very essence of the cadet experience and life skills and friendships that will last a lifetime. Wing Activities Day saw the squadron compete against others in what was a very event filled day. The squadron competed in banner drill, archery, leadership and STEM coming 16th overall. The squadron competed well with the squadron putting a banner team forward for the first time in over 15 years. They did the unit proud and we look forward to come back fighting next year.

It has been a busy few weekends for the squadron. With this weekend off it’s time to look back over some of the activities and events from the past few weeks. Kicking it off we look back to Armed Forces Day. The squadron participated in the local Armed Forces Families Day in Cinderford. Promoting the offering the cadets represent to the youth of the Forest. Yesterday 4 of our junior cadets were lucky to experience the thrill of gliding. The cadets were up early, where they were transported to RAF Little Rissington in the Cotswolds. Selected to participate in Operation Long Barrow, to get as many cadets flying as possible on the longest day. The weather was initially against us, with the cloud too low to allow flying. Although disappointing the weather soon improved, and gliding was able to resume. The cadets were all thoroughly tired, but had an enjoyable experience which they will be able to share with friends and family. Thanks to for hosting us and giving the cadets the chance to fly. All of the cadets have now achieved their blue flight wings. Having completed the relevant theory, flight sim ground school and practical flying or gliding element. South West Region RAFAC
