REinsTate Project

REinsTate Project We are a human enterprise zone - a facility to support the growth, wealth and resilience of Newham’s diverse workers, residents and communities.

ReSpace Projects is breathing new life into the historic Tate Institute, in Silvertown. We're transforming this beloved heritage building into a thriving community hub through sustainable construction, local arts programming, and enterprise development. From community BBQs and heritage exhibitions to construction workshops and creative residencies, the Tate Institute is becoming the heart of neigh

bourhood renewal. Every brick restored, every mural painted, every connection made brings this special place back to life. We work alongside Silvertown and North Woolwich residents, celebrating local heritage whilst creating opportunities for the future. Through circular economy practices and community-led development, we're proving that heritage preservation and community empowerment go hand in hand. The Tate Institute belongs to its community. Join us as we write its next chapter together.

Many hands make light work 👐

We had an amazing crew of volunteers descend on the building yesterday and help push the project forward.

They weren't scared to get stuck in and we're so grateful for their help 🙏

They relocated objects around the building freeing us vital space, brought reclaimed wood in to dry ready for use, built planters from pallets for the yard and gave the hall a massive glow up by prepping and painting the iconic pillars (undercoat for now).

This type of support helps fast track our ongoing efforts to provide a space for people to thrive.

We're grateful to everyone who got stuck in and to East London Business Alliance for making it happen.

Anna's restoration work on the panels of the south turret is complete. She worked tirelessly all week to strip back decades of paint, patch up damage, and apply a lovely white finish that will keep them looking their best for years to come.

To mark the moment, we jumped on the computer and created something special, a set of 3D-printed miniatures of the very panels she has been restoring.

The originals have looked out over Silvertown for nearly 140 years. These ones will keep watch over Anna's mantelpiece.

Anna was the first to receive them, and her reaction said it all. A huge thank you to her for an incredible week, and to Heritage of London Trust for funding the work and making the whole project possible.

We might just be making more of these in the future, so keep an eye out.

Not everyone loved the telephone! ☎️

To kick off our new Island Stories series, we sat down with Alan Mead to reflect on his incredible 61-year career at the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery in Silvertown.

This awesome clip confirms that even though we love our devices today, not everyone was quite so receptive to change when the first telephones arrived.

It has not all been paint and plaster this week. Master pargeter Anna Kettle has had a busy few days, balancing her delicate work on the south turret with a bit of teaching downstairs.

Between coats, she has been coming down off the scaffolding to meet groups of students, sharing the secrets of her rare trade and showing off the specialist tools, stamps and combs she uses in her work.

We also took the chance to talk with the students about the building itself, its history and our plans for its future.

A fitting moment for a building that was founded for the education and improvement of the local community.

Thanks once more to (HOLT) for supporting both the restoration and these sessions.

Master pargeter Anna Kettle is with us for the week, and has now moved on to the next stage of the restoration work on the south turret of the Tate Institute, prepping the surface for a fresh coat over the cleaned plaster to help protect the original details from the weather.

The transformation is striking, even at this stage.

One more coat to go!

Thanks once more to (HOLT) for funding this work.

140 years of paint, all sitting on top of each other.

As master pargeter Anna Kettle continues her restoration of the panels on the south turret, layer after layer is coming away, revealing the different colours these panels have carried over the decades. Fascinating to think each one was a deliberate choice at the time, a little snapshot of the era it was painted in.

Thanks again to (HOLT) for funding this meticulous work.

High on the south turret of the Tate Institute, Anna Kettle is peeling back decades of paint to uncover the original 1887 plasterwork beneath. Anna is a master of pargeting, a rare and endangered craft she has even taught to King Charles, and this week she is restoring the panels that have crowned the Tate Institute, a Silvertown landmark, for nearly 140 years.

The intricate reliefs were originally designed to inspire the workers of Tate & Lyle, and as Anna works, the crisp, proud details are emerging again after generations hidden under layers of paint.

Thanks to funding from the Heritage of London Trust (), the panels are being restored using traditional methods, ensuring they stay part of the Silvertown skyline for another century.

After all these years, it is a quiet thrill to see the original work emerging again.

In an age where we need new political heroes, we’ve found an old one.

Join us this Thursday for a costumed rehearsed reading of a trailblazing tale. Minnie Lansbury was a heroine of the Poplar Council who was imprisoned for protesting against levies that hit the poor hardest. It is a story that proves that while the times change, the struggle for social justice remains the same.

Performing at the Tate Institute, in Silvertown is a nod to the neighborhood's deep roots in the labor movement, these streets have a long memory of standing their ground.
