Join us for the Material Histories Procession, an artist and community-led walk celebrating the textile heritage of the East End.

As part of Whitechapel Gallery ‘s Backyard Biennial: East, we’ll be carrying community-made banners and handmade percussion instruments from Oxford House to Whitechapel Gallery, stopping along with poetry, artist provocations, local stories and many other ways to reflect on the histories of making in our community!

Saturday 5th September, from 10:30 - 13:30pm.

The event is free and open to all, donations welcome.

Join us for the Material Histories Procession, an artist and community-led walk celebrating the textile heritage of the East End.

Our Rhythm & Rag workshops are well underway, and we’ve been making some amazing instruments! 

This Thursday marks week three, where we’ll be moving on to tin can drums, while continuing our wearable shakers and as always you’ll be able to take a custom badge home!

These workshops are part of the Material Histories project, exploring East London’s textile heritage through making and music. We’re creating DIY percussion instruments inspired by the 1950s East End skiffle movement, ready for our banner procession to Whitechapel Gallery on 5th September, as part of Backyard Biennial: East.

See you this Thursday, 13th August, 10.30am–12.30pm at Oxford House.

Join us to make DIY percussion instruments from recycled materials, inspired by East London’s skiffle tradition. The instruments will become part of our community procession from Oxford House to Whitechapel Gallery as part of the Material Histories project.
