This summer, Material Histories brings together artists and community groups to explore Bethnal Green’s rich textile heritage as part of our Made in the East End programme 🧶💫

Working alongside five textile artists Anne Ogazi, Aya Haidar, Denise Hickey, Freya Gabie and Ruhela Begum, participants created community banners inspired by the area’s connections to the rag trade.

Drawing from the Oxford House archive and slow-making practices, Material Histories celebrates the craft traditions woven into East London’s past and present.

On view at Oxford House Gallery from 1st July – 3rd September 2026.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Over the course of six weeks, members of the community took part in Reframing the East End - a participatory photography programme led by Rehan Jamil.

Through street photography workshops with Rehan, an archive session at Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives, and a curation workshop at Whitechapel Gallery, participants explored the history and changing landscape of the East End while capturing their own perspectives of the area today.

These behind the scenes moments offer a glimpse into the process ahead of the final exhibition; opening on June 30th at 5:30pm!

We had such a brilliant time last week at the Write Where We Stand anthology launch! It was a really special afternoon celebrating community and listening to the poetry of a new generation.

Thank you again to  and  for all of their hard work and contributions to the project, and to the young people who shared their writing with us so openly and generously.

A huge thank you as well to and .makoha for leading the workshops and supporting the students throughout the process, aswell as both and .co for helping bring the anthology itself to life!

It was great to see the students’ work sit alongside material from the Oxford House archive as part of the Made in the East End programme. With thanks to for supporting the project.

Stay tuned for more from our Made in the East End programming soon 👀
