🌿 SUNDAY SOCIAL - LOST LAKES & LOCAL LEGENDS 🌿

Fancy discovering a hidden side of Wanstead Flats? Join us this Sunday, 23rd August from 2.30pm at Forest Gate Community Garden for a fascinating afternoon of forgotten history, local stories and intriguing legends!

Local historians Mark and Peter will take us back in time to uncover the lost lakes of Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park — exploring why they were created, the people who worked on them, and the stories that have slipped out of sight over the years.

Come along, settle in, and discover the secrets hiding in our local landscape. You might never look at Wanstead Flats in quite the same way again!

🌞🌑 Eclipse watching, Forest Gate style! 🌑🌞

The other group of staff and volunteers from Forest Gate Community Garden headed over to Wanstead Flats on Wednesday evening to watch the solar eclipse— (I’m guessing the louder of the 2 groups 🤣)

There was plenty of preparation beforehand, with Derek producing some special solar film for phone lenses and glasses to share around, while others embraced their inner Blue Peter presenters and got busy making pinhole viewers with card and paper. 🔭✂️

There was a lot of excitement, a bit of experimentation, plenty of “DON’T LOOK AT THE SUN!” and, of course, Mylene’s gorgeous homemade pear tart to keep everyone fuelled. 🍐🥧

And then the main event… 🌞🌑

A beautiful evening spent outdoors with good company, watching an extraordinary natural spectacle unfold above Wanstead.

Community, curiosity, a bit of cardboard and a pear tart — what more could you want 💫

We are very lucky! There were two places to see the eclipse with the FG crew. One in the garden and one on Wanstead flats. Derek was at the viewing in the garden amongst the pinholes, plant pots and colanders. Read all about it here…taking note of the superb photo by Lia of the different stages.
