LinkedIn: Headway London Road traffic accidents, falls, assaults and strokes have left over 150,000 Londoners disabled by brain injury. A brain injury can have a life changing effect on the individual, their
families and carers. Some people will need to deal with significant and on-going difficulties with their memory, concentration, emotions or behaviour as well as physical disability. These individuals may also face barriers when trying to re-enter the workplace and the wider community. At Headway East London we ensure that people affected by brain injury get the support they need, make new friends and find new hope. We run Headway House, the only brain injury centre of its kind in inner London to offer specialist services and neuro therapies. We believe that everyone has something to contribute within Headway and the wider community – that every person with a brain injury should be valued, respected and deserves every opportunity to live a full and active life. 🚇💂🏼‍♀️🏙️ New postcode, same spirit. South London, we're in! 🏙️💂🏼‍♀️🚇

Today we're opening our new South London day service!

Starting with a small weekly group in Deptford, this new space will offer creativity, connection, occupational projects and specialist support for brain injury survivors south of the river.

This new service is a major step in bringing our 2026-2031 strategy to life, helping us reach more people and make access to support fairer across London, expanding our catchment from 13 to 18 boroughs.

As our Chief Executive Sarah Lantsbury puts it:

"I think it’s important that people affected by brain injury can access support wherever they live.

South London has seen a significant gap in services since the closure of Headway South East London and North West Kent, and we’re incredibly grateful that SELNWK trusted us with their remaining funds to begin this work and provide long-term, sustainable support in the area.

At its heart, the new service is about creating a place where people feel welcomed, connected and supported.

More than anything, I hope our members feel at home. I hope they know they've got someone to turn to, and that they build friendships that last a lifetime."

We're incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this possible and excited to welcome our very first members through the doors.

“The Headway kitchen is a lifeline for me. I re-learned so many life skills that I lost due to my brain injury. I love the buzz and being part of a team making the magic happen.” ❤️

A shared meal at Headway London is about far more than just food.

Last year, our community kitchen served more than 13,000 meals, creating a space where people living with acquired brain injury can find friendship, belonging, purpose and opportunities to grow.

Now, we need your help to raise £12,000 to help keep free lunches and life-changing opportunities on the table for people rebuilding their lives after brain injury through our Kitchen Project.

As a thank you, we have a range of rewards available at different donation levels, including mystery artworks by Submit to Love artists, Headway EATS tickets and exclusive member-led experiences.

Sandra's infamous hot sauce will be served at our Supper Club on Thursday 17 September! 🌶️

Before her brain injury, Sandra was in the process of getting her secret recipe onto the shelves.

Now, she's working with our Kitchen Manager, Thomas, to get the ball rolling again...

She first started making it at home because her son got through so much of the store-bought stuff, and it soon became the number one hot sauce among her family and friends!

Join us next week for an evening of celebration and delicious food at our canalside home in Haggerston.

Tickets are £35 and include a welcome drink, canapés, a two-course meal, a facilitated conversation with two friends who helped shape the menu, and a musical performance. 💛

Can we swap this week's unpredictable rain for this instead? ☔😅☀️

Our Headway [East] London Day Service members and staff are still smiling over our recent day trip to Bikeworks, where we took part in an accessible cycling session and did glorious, sunny laps around the iconic Olympic Park. 💨

For Kim, who hadn't cycled since having a stroke, it was a chance to get back on two wheels independently for the first time since her injury.

“I love cycling.", says Kim. "I was told about the trip the week before, and I was counting down the days. [My bike] was my main mode of transport before I had a stroke, and the day I had the stroke was the last day I ever cycled. I was really looking forward to getting back on a bike on my own.”

More dispatches from this v special day coming soon... 👀🚲
