Vwede is my 26-year-old son, living with Down syndrome and global developmental delays. He moved to the UK at the age of 15, which meant his access to early intervention and support came much later than most. Despite this, he has shown remarkable determination and growth.
In 2015, Vwede began learning to play the drums at school. Through dedication and passion, he went on to achieve a Silver Award from the London School of Music in 2019 when he graduated from secondary school.
After COVID, he joined Electric Umbrella, an incredible inclusive music group that empowers people with learning disabilities. One of his proudest moments was performing with them on Britain’s Got Talent, sharing his talent on a national stage.
However, there was a time when Vwede’s drumming skills declined because his gift was not being nurtured due to lack of one-to-one support. This had a significant impact on his wellbeing—he had been taken away from his safe space drumming to singing.
As a mother and carer, I did what many SEND parents do: I searched for alternatives. Through one-to-one private lessons and continued dedication, I worked to help him reconnect with his passion.
As SEND parents, we must understand that our children may not always fit into traditional education or pathways. They may not read or write in conventional ways, but when we discover their talent, it is vital that we nurture it to its fullest potential. That talent becomes their safe space—their source of resilience, joy, and identity.
This is the power of music, music is a strong connection for my family because we all have talent in singing and it is a powerful way of supporting vwede. This is the impact of opportunity, support, and belief.
I am deeply grateful to Christ Royal Church Hackney under the leadership of Pastor Tayo Ogunmefun, an inclusive place of worship that opened its doors and allowed me to support Vwede in finding his rhythm again. The Fathers Joy a charity dedicated to supporting SEND parents and their children, Dominion Church Watford under the leadership of Pastor Emeka who also created a safe space for him closer to home. Sanctuary of Music Watford, a charity, generously provides us with a free practice space each week. Music Gym Garston, thank you for the one-to-one lessons. And finally, Vwede’s 13year-old tutor, Jeremiah Nwosu—Jeremiah and his family introduced us to the Sanctuary of Music and even provided free private lessons to help reignite Vwede’s passion.
