CBS News came to Hub Connections! 📺💚

For World Mental Health Day, the team joined us to see what community support looks like in action. What they found: live music 🎶, movement 🧘, relaxation 🌿 and the simple relief of being heard 💬

They also met Peter, one of the people who came along to share his lived experience. He found support here in Barnet and now volunteers to be there for others, hoping to create more safe spaces where everyone feels they belong. ✨

As Tola Kolawole, Head of the Barnet Wellbeing Service, says in the CBS News feature: “it’s all about the people.” 🤝

That’s what the Barnet Wellbeing Service is for. Led by CB Plus and delivered with Meridian Wellbeing, Mind in Enfield and Barnet, New Citizens Gateway and Young People Thrive, it connects Barnet residents with support from across the borough. 🏡

Today is World Mental Health Day 💜

This year's theme is lived experience, and it's something we believe in at the heart of everything we do. The people who know what works best are the people who've lived it.

So we're listening. We're involving. We're acting. 🗣️🧡

Real voices, real change. Tell us in the comments: what does good support look like in your community? 👇

How a Barnet resident overcame loneliness.

Ricky is a 31-year-old man from Barnet. When he self-referred to Barnet Friends, a telephone befriending service for lonely 18-55 year old adults in Barnet, he discussed with his befriender how his anxiety and ADHD diagnosis had contributed to feelings of loneliness.

Ricky had also struggled with insomnia for years, which sometimes contributed to him feeling too tired to leave his home.
Over time his Befriender was able to get him to open up on his childhood love of drawing and encouraged him to pursue this hobby again.

Ricky was signposted to Community Focus Inclusive Arts, a disability arts charity, where he took part in a fine arts course, reconnecting with his childhood hobby.

Whilst his ADHD diagnosis contributed to difficulty in planning and focusing on tasks, impacting his ability to carry out job searches and complete job applications; he signed up with the employment service, Shaw Trust.

Through Shaw Trust he met other residents with ADHD and began to develop new friendships. He was able to develop work-based skills through attending digital skills lessons and given on tips on planning his diary to make job applications less daunting.

Whilst Ricky still struggles with insomnia, it has improved considerably after his Befriender encouraged him to speak to his GP. Following the completion of his fine arts course, he maintained contact with some of the other group attendees, where they organised several cinema trips.

If you are struggling with loneliness, reach out to Barnet Friends today where you can speak to a friendly Befriender each week.

Meet Dipesh, aged 38 from Barnet.

Dipesh accessed Barnet Friends as he was experiencing severe social isolation. He had no friends or family in England after moving here from Pakistan 10 years ago. He was shunned by his family and community in his native Pakistan after coming out as gay.

He experienced panic attacks every time he left the house as he was worried he would receive homophobic abuse. His Befriender gently encouraged him to access learning opportunities to help him feel connected to the community.

One year on from using Barnet Friends, Dipesh completed an ESOL Course and became certified as a woman’s hairdresser.
He has also been attending his local mosque and completed therapy to successfully manage his trauma around the homophobic abuse he received; and no longer experiences panic attacks when leaving his home.

If you are experiencing loneliness, are aged 18-55, and either living, working, or studying in Barnet, self-refer to Barnet Friends today to speak with one of our kind and friendly Befrienders on the phone each week!

Did you know we work across London? 🗺️

What started in Barnet has grown into work across boroughs throughout the capital: mental health and wellbeing, youth services, Deaf outreach, community connection, and more, wherever people need it.

Same values, same commitment, just a lot more ground covered.

What if support started sooner? 💭

Most prevention work begins in secondary school, but self-harm and suicidal thoughts often start earlier than that. Early Action is a research project we're proud to be part of, alongside King's College London, Papyrus UK and Speakers Collective, exploring what support could look like before those experiences even begin.

This isn't research done to young people, it's shaped by them. Young people, parents and carers are involved in designing this work from the very start, not just consulted once the decisions are already made. 🤝

Because prevention shouldn't only begin once something's already gone wrong.

If you or someone you know needs support right now, Papyrus HOPELINE247 is free and confidential for young people: 0300 102 2470 💙

Many people in the United Kingdom experience loneliness at some point in their life. Loneliness can be defined as a lack of quality relationships with others, where the social connections you desire do not meet your needs.

You can be surrounded by other people but still feel lonely if you do not have any quality of relationships- where the human connection is lacking.

According to The Office of National Statistics, 23% of people reported feeling lonely some, or all the time. The symptoms of persistent loneliness can negatively impact on our mental health making us feel miserable.

If you cannot remember the last time you had a meaningful conversation, or even a phone call with someone you care about; reach out to Barnet Friends today.

Barnet Friends is a telephone befriending service for lonely adults aged 18-55 in Barnet. We can match you to one of our kind and non-judgemental Befriender’s in less than two weeks. You will receive weekly calls for up to 12 months.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, and it also marks one year since The Stay Project launched. 💙

Su***de prevention work saves lives, but it takes a real toll on the people doing it. Frontline staff and volunteers across London face burnout, isolation, and often very little support of their own.

For the past year, The Stay Project has worked to change that, bringing together four partner organisations to deliver trauma-informed training, reflective spaces, and long-term wellbeing support across London's boroughs. Because the people saving lives deserve to be looked after too. 🤝

One year in, and we're proud of how far this work has come. 🎉

If you're a frontline worker, volunteer, or organisation working in su***de prevention, this exists for you.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, a national campaign to raise awareness of su***de by tackling the stigma of mental health by having conversations around our wellbeing.

This year’s theme, ‘Changing The Narrative on Su***de’, is centred around empathy by providing a non-judgemental space for someone who might be struggling with suicidal thoughts.

The latest statistics from Office of National Statistics, found that over 7,000 people took their own life in the United Kingdom in 2024.

Men are up to four times more likely to take their own life that women, with su***de being the biggest killer of men under the age of 50.
