Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the privilege of watching a group of talented young people step into a professional production environment, take on new roles, build their confidence and discover what they’re capable of.

From studio production and floor management to production management and everything in between, our Birmingham trainees have put their skills into practice and experienced what it’s really like to work in the creative industries.

But MAMA Youth Project is about more than training.

Our mission is to create opportunities, open doors and build bridges between young people and the creative industries. Giving them the skills, experience, networks and confidence they need to take their next step.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who made this Birmingham programme possible. Our incredible trainees, trainers, mentors, industry professionals, partners, production crew and everyone behind the scenes who gave their time, knowledge and expertise.

From MAMA Youth Project to the studio floor. 🎥

We’re celebrating MYP alumni Thomas Duffill, who is now working as a Studio Runner at Optomen Television.

Thomas is putting the skills and experience gained through his time with MAMA Youth Project into practice, taking another important step towards building his career in the television industry.

Working as a Studio Runner is an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a professional production environment, develop new skills and learn from experienced teams working across television.

At MAMA Youth Project, our aim is to help young people break into the creative industries and build sustainable careers by giving them the training, experience and support they need to take that first step.

Thomas’ journey is another example of the opportunities that can follow when young people are given the chance to develop their potential.

🏆 We’re proud to announce that MAMA Youth Project has been officially nominated for Outstanding Contribution to Equality & Diversity at the INSPIRE Awards 2027!

A huge thank you to the person who took the time to nominate MAMA Youth Project. To know that our work and contribution to creating opportunities for young people has been recognised means a great deal to us.

For over 20 years, MAMA Youth Project has worked to break down barriers and create pathways into the creative industries for young people from underrepresented backgrounds.

The INSPIRE Awards celebrate people and organisations making a genuine difference through their work, businesses and communities. It’s an honour to be recognised and to be among so many inspirational nominees.

Whatever happens next, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the nomination itself and, most importantly, the young people, alumni, staff, partners and supporters who make our work possible. ❤️

🎬 From developing a game show idea to working behind the scenes on production. Brandon got stuck into it all.

As part of our recent Birmingham cohort delivered by MAMA Youth Project in partnership with Prime Video Pathways, Brandon stepped into a role that brought together research, development and production running.

From pitching a game show concept to producers, researching and casting Midlands-based talent, working with the props department and sourcing equipment, to the hands-on realities of getting things from A to B on a busy production. Brandon experienced the full mix.

That’s exactly what industry experience should do: give emerging talent the opportunity to learn, contribute and discover where they can thrive.

Now, Brandon and our wider alumni community are industry-ready and looking for their next opportunity.

🎬 “Knowing what to do in the real world.”

For Libby, stepping into the role of Production Manager during our Studio Production Training in Birmingham gave her something invaluable: real-world experience.

Having the opportunity to work in a professional studio alongside real talent and experienced industry specialists gave Libby a first-hand understanding of what it takes to work in a production environment. From communicating with talent and working alongside a professional crew, to understanding production etiquette, professionalism and the importance of being prepared and on time.

At MAMA Youth Project, we believe young people deserve the opportunity to experience the industry, not just hear about it.

That’s why our training puts trainees into professional production environments, giving them the opportunity to take on real roles, work alongside industry professionals and develop the practical skills, confidence and understanding needed to step into the creative industries.

After completing the programme, Libby is now industry ready. 🎥

And she’s not the only one. Our Birmingham cohort is made up of talented young people who are ready to take the next step into the industry.

We were proud to take to the stage at UN//SCENE Festival for an important conversation:

Has inclusion really changed over the past 20 years? And what can we ALL do to make things better?

Hosted by Yewande Ogunkoya, the conversation brought together our CEO Bob Clarke, Director of Operations Rio Gayle, and MAMA Youth Project alumni Timi McEwen, who is now working in the industry.

Together, they reflected on where we’ve come from, where we are today, and the work that still needs to be done to create a more inclusive creative industry.

It was a brilliant opportunity to represent MAMA Youth Project and share what we see every day: talent exists everywhere, but opportunity doesn’t always.

For over 20 years, MAMA Youth Project has been creating pathways for young people from underrepresented backgrounds into the creative industry — connecting them with training, industry professionals and real opportunities to build their careers.

And having Timi, one of our alumni, now representing the industry alongside our leadership team is a powerful example of why that work matters. 🌱➡️🎬

Inclusion isn’t just about opening the door. It’s about making sure people have the opportunity, confidence, connections and support to walk through it and continue to thrive once they’re inside.

🎥 “I can reach out to these people.”

For Malachi, one of the biggest takeaways from our Studio Production Training in Birmingham has been confidence.

Through MAMA Youth Project, our trainees get more than hands-on creative training. We have established credibility within the industry and direct links with professionals and companies across the creative sector, giving young people opportunities to meet, connect and build relationships with people already working in the industry.

For many young people, taking that first step and introducing yourself can feel daunting. That’s where we come in.

We help create the bridge between young talent and the industry, giving our trainees the confidence to come out of their shell, start conversations, network and recognise that they have a place in these spaces too.

Malachi’s experience is a great example of what can happen when young people are given the skills, access and confidence to put themselves out there.

FROM MYP TO THE WORLD OF SKY SPORTS 🎬 🚀

We’re celebrating MYP alumni Sam Sheppey, who has recently started a Freelance Production Junior role at Sky Sports.

Sam’s journey is a great example of what can happen when young people are given the skills, experience, networks and opportunities to get their foot in the door of the creative industry.

Sam recently completed our Birmingham Studio Production Training, delivered in partnership with Prime Video Pathways, gaining hands-on experience and developing his production skills.

Now, he’s taking those skills into the industry and beginning his journey at Sky Sports. 📺

At MAMA Youth Project, we’re committed to creating pathways into careers that young people from underrepresented backgrounds may not have previously seen themselves in.

Training can open the door. Opportunity can change a career.

Sam’s story is just one example of what’s possible. 💯
