Lincolnshire Mammal Group Established in 2025 by some keen MSc students, we’re Lincoln’s first Mammal Society group. Affiliated to the Mammal Society.

After winning the Mammal Society’s national UMAC 2025 challenge, we wanted to continue making a difference for our local mammals.

Findings from our latest litter pick at Hartsholme Park.

Big v**e or little Tom?

We found a lot of rubbish blown into the understory area

An old harness anyone?

Lots of long lost dog balls, thinking of all the little puppers that must have had to go home without them 🥺🐶

Lots of b**r and energy drink cans, enough to make an entire rainbow of colours!

Hard at work 💪🏻

If you look closely, you can see where small mammals have been chewing on this

And here too. It’s how plastic migrates up the food chain and why you find it in birds of prey - they eat the mammals that eat the plastic.

Small things

Big things

Long things

Wind-blown things (and boy it was windy!)

Some beautiful and HUGE pine cones

Some could say this was bee-utiful

A little helper

Shoe?!

And some beautiful areas 🌊

Lots of cans and sweet wrappers

Looking in all the little spots litter might blow

And we ended up with three big bags full! Thank you to the rangers at the park for disposing of it for us and we hope to see everyone in January for our new year pick.

Any places you know locally that need a clean up? Let us know so we can add it to our list!

At the weekend we took part in the Lincolnshire Biodiversity and Regenerative Food Festival in Lincoln.

It was lovely to talk to so many members of the public about their mammal encounters and answer their questions. Lots of people had a go at our guess the poo game and we raised some funds for the group through selling handmade bookmarks, badges and by having a tombola. All the money raising goes straight back into mammal conservation and educating the public about our UK mammals.

Each Monday we aim to share a mammal video one of our members has sent in.

This week’s video features a hungry mouse.

Did you know we have six species of mice in the UK, but do you know which species this one is? Pick from House Mouse, Harvest Mouse, Wood Mouse, Yellow-necked Mouse, Hazel Dormouse and Edible Dormouse, and let us know which species you think is in this video!

Send us your Lincolnshire based mammal videos, and you just might be featured next week!

Last weekend the Mammal Group were invited to attend the launch event of the Lincolnshire Rewilding Network at Wild Wrendale.

We were treated to a tour of the Wild Wrendale site from owners Hannan and Jack, sat down for a screening of Derek v Derek, a documentary film highlighting the debate between traditional agriculture and large-scale rewilding through a real-life neighbourly dispute and got to meet likeminded people from the world of conservation.

The Lincolnshire Rewilding Network aims to bring together, people, projects and communities with an interest in rewilding across the county to share knowledge and practical action to help nature recover at different scales, whether you have access to a window box, a garden, community space or own your own land.

Massive thank you to the Lincolnshire Rewilding Network Team for inviting the Lincolnshire Mammal Group to be part of the launch.

Each Monday we aim to share a mammal video one of our members has sent in.

This week’s video features videos from a novel camera trap set up. Thank you to Georgie for sending us some of your videos that were recorded using the BucketBuddy camera trapping system.

The BucketBuddy is a low cost, non-invasive camera trap housing design used to monitor small mammal populations like voles, mice and shrews. It replaces traditional, time-consuming live-trapping methods which can have a negative impact on the mammals captured.

The BucketBuddy set up allows for clear, downward facing photos and videos of small mammals to be recorded. The BucketBuddy is relatively inexpensive (under £10 in materials) and quick to build which makes it ideal for community conservation projects and large-scale field surveys. The upright bucket with lid provides weather resistance, stability and easy access for camera maintenance without needing to flip the trap and the entrance holes on either side allow for a quick getaway if a predator happens to stumble upon a small mammal.

If you would like to learn more about the BucketBuddy, follow the link in our bio.

Send us your Lincolnshire based mammal videos, and you just might be featured next week!
