A migrant-led charity connecting organisations, communities and decision-makers to strengthen community voices and influence better services, policies and opportunities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. We aim to increase access to local services, offer support with welfare, housing, health and other entitlements, reduce isolation and increase community cohesion. We are also develops the works in developing countries (Africa only)
We do this by:

• Providing one to one advisory sessions
• Offering assistance in understanding and completing forms, asylum appeals, citizenship
• Researching background information to support the immigration cases of failed asylum seekers
• Helping to prepare supporting letters
• Liaising with other agencies by fax and phone to resolve client problems
• Signposting to specialist agencies and solicitors specialising in immigration
• Providing signposting and access to translation services
• Language support in: English, French, Swahili
• Providing workshops in job search, job applications, interview skills, CV writing, basic computer skills, citizenship
• Running community music workshops
• Providing voluntary work experience for refugees and asylum seekers

This Black History Month, we’re celebrating the stories, experiences and contributions that continue to shape our communities 💚

At AIG, we work alongside people from communities with different histories, cultures and experiences every day. Making space for those experiences to be heard matters.

Through projects including the Afro Heritage Project, we’re also helping preserve African migration stories and cultural heritage so that they form part of Leicester’s recorded history for generations to come.

We’re pleased to announce that AIG has received support from BBC Children in Need to deliver Youth Futures – a new three-year programme for refugee and asylum-seeking young people aged 12–18 in Leicester.

Young people taking part can look forward to:

🤝 Weekly youth sessions – meet others, build friendships and take part in activities

💬 One-to-one mentoring – build confidence, set goals and talk through next steps

💻 Life & digital skills – develop practical skills for everyday life and the future

🌟 Role-model sessions – meet people with different experiences and career journeys

🎓 Progression support – explore education, training and volunteering opportunities

Over three years, Youth Futures aims to directly support around 120 young people, who will also have a say in the activities and how the programme develops.

Mental health support isn’t equally easy for everyone to access.

For refugees, migrants and people settling into a new community, language barriers, isolation, trauma and unfamiliarity with UK services can make it harder to know where to turn or ask for help.

At AIG, our work includes helping people understand their options, navigate health and wellbeing services and connect with appropriate support. We also create opportunities for people to build connections within their communities, helping to reduce the isolation that can affect wellbeing.

This World Mental Health Day, we're highlighting the importance of mental health support that people can understand, trust and access.

Lead Insight Issue 1 is now live 📢

Our first Lead Insight report brings together what members of the Lead to Change Network told us about the challenges facing the communities they work with across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The report sets out the priorities identified by members and introduces four Change Labs that will take this work forward – creating space to examine shared challenges, bring together evidence and develop collective responses.

We've also published the Lead to Change Terms of Reference, outlining how the Network works, how decisions are made and how organisations can get involved.

As we move into the next chapter for Afro Innovation Group, we’re introducing a refreshed set of values that reflect how we want to work, lead and create change alongside our communities.

Our new values sit at the heart of our new Strategic Plan, shaping how we listen to community voices, work with others, make decisions and turn what we learn into action.

They reflect the organisation AIG is today – and the direction we’re taking for the years ahead.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about what each of our values means in practice.

Our first Lead to Change Network meeting brought 20 community representatives together at Afro Innovation Group.

We heard about challenges across housing, health, employment, immigration and welfare, financial hardship, access to services, social isolation and more.

What became clear was how often issues overlap across different communities.

That is exactly why AIG created Lead to Change – to bring that knowledge together, identify shared priorities and build stronger evidence for action and influence.

Following the first meeting, AIG will establish regular communication between members, develop the first Change Labs around identified priorities and continue growing the network.

Afro hair is part of how many people express their culture and identity – but it has also been a source of discrimination.

That’s why WORLD AFRO DAY matters.

Now marking its 10th year, the global movement celebrates Afro hair while working to challenge hair discrimination in schools, workplaces and wider society.

For AIG, this also connects closely with our work around African heritage. Heritage isn't only found in archives or objects. It can be found in how we dress, how we wear our hair, the traditions we inherit and what we pass on to the next generation.

Today, we're celebrating Afro hair as part of that story, and everyone’s right to wear it without prejudice.

Through our work, we speak with people who need help understanding where to go, who to contact or what steps they need to take to access the right support.

These individual experiences also help us understand where access could be made clearer and easier.

On International Day of Charity, we're thinking about what support makes possible.

For us, it means being there when someone needs help navigating a difficult situation, supporting people into employment, helping families access services, creating opportunities for communities to connect and making sure the experiences we hear through our work have a voice beyond the frontline.
