This World Refugee Day, we're reflecting on the many refugees who have become valued members of our communities here in Leicester.

Over the years, we've seen people arrive facing uncertainty, language barriers and unfamiliar systems, then go on to find employment, start businesses, volunteer, study and contribute to community life.

Their stories are a reminder that when people are given the opportunity to rebuild, communities become stronger for it.

We are delighted to share that Evariste Tshindio, Projects Director at Afro Innovation Group, has been awarded the Best PGR Poster Prize at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU)'s SDG Poster Celebration, held as part of the University's 50th anniversary celebrations.

The award recognised his doctoral research, Building Financial Resilience in Migrant-Led Nonprofit Organisations, which explores how community organisations can become more sustainable and resilient in the face of funding challenges and inequality.

The research contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on reducing inequalities, strengthening institutions, promoting decent work and building effective partnerships.

At Afro Innovation Group, we strongly believe that research should not sit on a shelf. When connected to communities and lived experience, it can help shape better practice, stronger organisations and more effective support for the people who need it most.

Congratulations to Evariste on this well-deserved achievement and thank you to everyone who has supported the journey so far.
